Candy Crush KING IPO $7.6 Billion (est) As "FREE To Play" Rocks Mobile Gaming | Must Play | Scoop.it
Though it sounds like another frothy tech valuation, the Candy Crush developer booked a remarkable $1.8 billion in sales in 2013.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

The "free to play" model is interesting and a great lesson in community based (social) Internet marketing. Better to get MORE people using and contributing since the DATA they provide can be turned into currency.

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

This post explains that the 16% who limit their game play to downloads limit their play in critical ways because discs and distribution via GameStop-like stores where players return games for a substantial credit against the next purchase.

Hmmmmmmm.....

Post also points out prices don't reflect the savings of downloads...yet. CDs used to be like that too, not so much anymore. We know we are moving to a "download everything" future, but the cloud version of our disc economy is hardly mature.

Going to mature faster than e think and open source game development has some interesting angle that could maintain the collectors aspect of gaming.

Game developers, much like content marketers, need to think PLATFORM and less "disc based" economy since the one has a future and the other is already dead man walking.

Video Games May improve Dyslexia & Your Internet Marketing [study]

Video Games May improve Dyslexia & Your Internet Marketing [study] | Must Play | Scoop.it
For people with dyslexia, playing action video games may help them better manage shifting attention between audio and visual cues, new research reveals.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

There are several things I like about this study including how it shifts thinking about games as superfluous and moves them to important and educational - a point Steven Johnson makes in Everything Bad Is Good For You.

As a dyslexic who spent many hours with his hand under his chin spelling words phonetically. The learning about sound was fascinating. Researchers think if they can control sound and visual stimulation, like in a video game, dyslexics may learn better (faster).

This is what I remember about dyslexia - learning was so HARD, so inefficient. The other kids could write and spell. I struggled with those outward manifestations of "learning", yet my mind was capable of grasping complex concepts (for a ten year old).

I could DISCUSS those concepts too, but I couldn't WRITE IT DOWN at least not in a way anyone but me could understand it. There is another lesson in this post - don't limit your thinking about how to solve a problem to a narrow band.

How can you add some "video game dyslexia study" into your marketing. Can you make your marketing a game? If you think about it getting people to know and love you online is a bit like teaching a dyslexic, a dyslexic in a hurry.

The nice thing about having a strong tribe of content consumers and creators is new revenue options fall from the trees. Video gaming becoming a spectator sport isn't a surprise.

Why not? With social media watching can be as engaging as playing. Once again video game creators can teach Internet marketing about how to create and monetize content.

Five Foundational Design Pillars Of Game Development (and Internet marketing)

Five Foundational Design Pillars Of Game Development (and Internet marketing) | Must Play | Scoop.it

Love this post and the 5 pillars have much to teach ecommerce and B2B Internet marketers:

1) Everything is story
First up, we want the player to constantly feel as if they are inside a flowing narrative. It is so common that a game is distinctly split into story and puzzle/action moments. We want to blur the boundaries here and make it impossible to distinguish between the two. Whatever the player does it should feel as if it is part of the story. We do not want to have sections that simply feel like blockers to the next narrative moment. From start to finish the player should be drenched in a living, breathing world of storytelling.

2) Take the world seriously
This leads us to the next point: that every detail in an environment is connected to the story somehow. Nothing should be written off as simply a requirement for gameplay or exposition. For instance, if you find an audio log you will be able to learn more about the story by pondering its placement alone. There should be no need to "double-think"; the game's world should be possible to evaluate on its own terms.

3) The player is in charge
When you invest this much in a setting, it's important to make sure that players feel connected to it. In order to this we need to put a bigger responsibility on the player. An environment quickly loses its sense of realism if it is extremely streamlined and does not allow you to make choices. The player must be the one that drives the narrative forward.

4) Trust the player
This brings us to the next point: that we trust players to act according to the story. We do not force players to notice events by use of cutscenes and similar, but assume they will properly explore the environment and act in a rational fashion. We simply set up situations and then let the player have full control over their actions.

5) Thematics emerge through play
Now for our last foundational design rule: that the game's thematics will emerge through play. SOMA is meant to explore deep subjects such as consciousness and the nature of existence. We could have done this with cutscenes and long conversations, but we chose not to. We want players to become immersed in these thematics, and the discussions to emerge from within themselves.

WOW, if I could get an ecommerce or content marketing website to live by those rules it would never have to worry about more converting traffic. Too good!

Teaching Empathy Through Digital Game Play

“ Video games can offer a playful approach to learning a new concept, providing a jumping off point for diving deeply into a topic. Games can’t do all the teaching, but they are an engaging way to get kids thinking -- even about ethics.”

Via Gust MEES, Reucover
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

I love the idea of teaching through video games. One of my favorite books is Steven Johnson's Everything Bad Is Good For You.

Johnson's book is about how the video revolution has helped make us smarter and ready us for ths crazy digital time we live in. Johnson proposes a clear way to know the differnedce beteen life NOW and THEN. Try watching an old show like My Three Sons or I Dream of Jeannie. Can't be done. Too slow and goofy.

This post makes me wonder how ecommerce websies could "teach empathy" via games too.

9 Amazing Things Unique to Video Games, All #StealThis For Ecom

9 Amazing Things Unique to Video Games, All #StealThis For Ecom | Must Play | Scoop.it
9 Amazing Things Unique to Video Games
IGN
If I asked you what's unique about video games, would you be able to name more than three things?
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Unique To Video Games, But For Home Much Longer?
As a former Director of Ecommerce, stealing any 3 of these ideas currently unique to video games would be worth millions:

Immersion

Engagement

Sense of presence

Interactivity
Shaping The Experience
Customizability

Progress Blockers
Mastery
Replayability

You might think these last three would never apply to ecom, and you would be wrong. Sometimes ecommerce uses progress blockers to filer out the conversion lowering MOOKS (lol).

Mastery - a sense of understanding a "world" so well you are KING or QUEEN of it is always a good idea.

Replayability is the hardest of the three since ecommerce shouldn't suddenly change, but it can add things IN such as Easter Eggs or Amazon's famous gold box. Ecom can also use TIME as the reset button as Amazon does with their Gold Box.

I've yet to find an article about video games that is not spot on to my 7 years and over $30M in online sales as a Director of Ecommerce. The Internet marketing team that figures out how to use video game-like techniques, ideas and strategies makes the next $30M.

First TCG Based Anime Story With RPG Elements Taking Game To Heart of MMO Gameplay via Kickstarter

The first TCG based on fantasy anime story, taking the TCG game into the heart of MMO game play with RPG elements.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

I don't begin to understand much of this Kickstarter project created by Totally Awesome Games in Oklahoma, but creating games from anime with RPG elements (whatever they are) sounds cool.

Great lesson here for startups. When you pitch ideas GO SLOW. Remember not everyone viewing your Kickstarter campaign will know what RPG elements are. Over explain especially when asking for money.

I like the video once we are out of the car. Shooting someone talking in a car isn't something I would advise. Its distracting and worrisome (will he crash lol).

Where is the physical space where these game designers work? If they don't work in a cool space together I would have shot at least part of the video in a space that looks like a game design company. I'm not saying be inauthentic, but when asking for $75K best to create confidence.

Investor confidence is based on a number of factors including:

* What you say.
* How you say it.
* What others say.
* How others say what they say.

The problem here is we step directly into the middle of a conversation I only half understand. I plan to give $100 because I'm intrigued, but there is a real ART to marketing especially crowdfunding marketing that is mostly missed here.

Hope these guys make it despite the confusion and will make my usual offer to TAG, Inc. If they would like help with their marketing contact me and I will be glad to contribute ideas Free.

Cloud Gaming Benefits, Games as a Service (GaaS) & Future of...Everything | via @CloudTweaks | Must Play | Scoop.it
Cloud gaming is gaining considerable momentum for a number of reasons and is positioning itself as the future of how games will be played
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

GaaS despite its funny initials could provide a peek into the future of....well everything. We've already seen a MONSTER TREND toward appification (smaller code updated more frequently) and along comes "cloud gaming".

Benefits of "cloud gaming" include:

* More room on your hard drive (some games can take 14 gigs).
* Games are saved in the cloud so hard drive crash = no worries.

* Better Game Play (thanks to way memory is handled).
* More efficiency will change game development (eventually).

Love this paragraph despite only partially understanding it:

"With recent breakthroughs in hybrid streaming, such as what CiiNOW has done by streaming video and graphics primitives at the same time, it’s much easier to send complex information to mobile devices, tablets and computers at lower bandwidth. Some games are provided through file streaming, a method in which a small percentage of the game is initially installed on a graphics-capable device to allow immediate play.

During play, the remainder of the game continues to download. For movie, TV or less graphic intensive games, video streaming- or video on demand- eliminates the necessity of a game console. Although game consoles or PCs will probably continue to be prevalent, cloud gaming will likely continue to gain popularity as a way to experience new games without having to buy entire game systems."

What I can understand from those points is something we found with CureCancerStarter.org. Use of cloud services allows for "larger" pages to load faster. The impact on web and game design of building in cloud benefits is hard to over estimate.

Great article on the state of mobile gaming. Love this section:

As the gaming industry shifts its focus from computers and consoles to mobile devices, the demand for new games rises, as each smart device owner becomes a gamer: the number of gamers will reach 1,55 billion this year.[2] The availability of these new gaming devices, broad-band coverage, the screen size and new business models are influencing the gaming expansion.

Mobile games are becoming an increasingly important component of the global industry and currently account for 33% of all app downloads and an impressive 66% of all app revenue[2]. They are also the most time consuming: 32% of our time on mobile we spend playing games, far ahead of browsing (20%) and Facebook (18 %)[3].

Everything Bad Is Good For You
Steven Johnson's book Everything Bad Is Good For You supplements this post nicely. Our contemporary world is complex and crowded. Video games teach an essential set of skills via play and fun.

Adults Learn Best When Engaged
I can't sit in class anymore. Its too passive. My consumption is active, I want to take when I read, watch or find and share it across my nets. I learn best the way medical students are taught:

* Watch One.
* Do One.

* Teach one.

Video games create the watch, do, teach dynamic AND the combine it with our most open and creative "brain", the "play brain". I write this and admit I am NOT a video gamer, something I hope to fix soon (at 55). Why? Because its fun.
