Simon Terry talks about the role of Working Out Loud (WOL) in building, sharing and translating (tacit) knowledge in remote teams.
He reinforces the need for multiple tools/channels and approaches, including Enterprise Social Networks (ESNs), coaching, debriefing etc.
These highlight the additional challenge of making workplace learning intentional when people are working remotely. I also see huge opportunity and need for leaders/executives to model WOL and to leverage tools like the ESN to extend their reach and to promote transparency in a time when they are less visible/accessible.
“I’ve added a group in Yammer to our course. And no-one is talking in it!” I’ve heard this so many times. Learning and Development run an in-person course, bolt-on a Yammer group for the attendees to “talk to each other about the course” and wonder why no-one does so. Quite often they blam
Andrew Gerkens's insight:
'If people don't share on Yammer/ESN, if execs don't engage, if people aren't talking to each other - the problem is with people, not the technology'.
I spend much of my time encouraging people to use Yammer, an enterprise social network. I talk often about how sharing information in Yammer is an effective way to collaborate. Time is saved, potential frustration with colleagues is reduced, and everyone works more effectively with better results. As hard as I work, as much as…

This article pulls apart a single quote from Simon Terry, to create a rich picture of how people can WOL and create value through ESNs. Simon's quote is:
“Sharing work as it develops enables you to reflect on your work. It brings stakeholders into work early to provide feedback and assistance. It encourages you to be purposeful and effective in your work. Importantly it also enables others to develop a passive awareness of your work progress and to learn from how you do your work.”
In one of the most popular TED Talks, Simon Sinek encourages people to “Start with Why”. That is, leaders should focus on articulating their organization’s purpose to move people into action. My…

Rita Zonius talks the relationship between intranets and ESNs, keeping momentum going post launch and more in our latest Digital Workplace Leaders series.
Andrew Gerkens's insight:
“Social technologies are not a replacement for intranets, but can help supercharge their effectiveness,” A great quote from Rita Zonius. ESNs help people connect with each other & resources like the intranet or the shared drive, which might otherwise be hidden away or difficult to search. Think about how your ESN can help capture and connect people with know 'how' and know 'who' at speed and as living knowledge.
Innovation and collaboration—those two words come up nearly every time I ask business leaders what they want to see more of in their organization. It doesn’t take too long to find out that these leaders don’t always know exactly what those words mean.

What is the difference between collaboration, cooperation and coordination?
'Network analysis shows what happens in the white space on the organization chart. HR is very good with org charts, but the boxes and the lines connecting them aren’t always how things get done'
Digital workplace projects like enterprise social network (ESN) implementations often lack upfront planning and alignment on broader strategic business objectives. As projects roll out organizations and digital transformation teams often struggle to clarify and articulate business value and impact

This is a blog on social technologies and what it can do for organisations. Does it liberate people within organisations?
Andrew Gerkens's insight:
An excellent review and further exploration of the concepts explored in the book, 'Social Technologies in Business'. My own short review -
‘To get digital, you need to be digital’ says @AndrewGrill in this lovely book that brings together the shared ideas and experiences of a group of global thought leaders and practitioners, including Australia’s Simon Terry (@simongterry) and Rita Zonius (@RitaZonius), who first connected and now continue to work out loud (#WOL) together using social technology. The four chapters (Ideas, Tools, Methods, Case Studies) can be explored independently or in sequence and contain easily digestible chunks, key idea summaries and useful quotes. The book is a call to action for practitioners. We need to experiment with, role model and ‘be digital’ for our own benefit, if we are to enable and support our organisations to realise the potential of social. Following and engaging with the authors of this book through Twitter and LinkedIn is an easy and exciting way to take the themes raised in this book further and continue the conversation.

A great article to help senior leaders/execs understand the shift to the social enterprise and to open up dialogue around the fears, assumptions and desire to control that are holding them and the organisation back.
'Social is one of those things that if you don’t do, you don’t get. And if leaders are not professionally socially active, you will never get a social organisation'.
'After hundreds of clients, over more than two decades of organizational network analysis, we keep seeing the same pattern in our clients that are performing well. The emergent structure of their organization reveals the pattern -- interconnected triangles of STRONG work relationships within AND between organizational parts (departments/functions/teams/etc)', Valdis Krebs
Hi! My name is Melanie, and I’m afraid of sock puppets. Specifically, I’m worried about the “Post On Behalf Of” (POBO) feature on the roadmap for Yammer, and that road to the Bad Place that’s paved with good intentions.
Andrew Gerkens's insight:
I read this article more from the perspective of considering the role of leaders using the ESN to extend the reach and impact of their authentic leadership. Leaders have a wonderful opportunity to engage as their authentic selves. Outsourcing their posts to others potentially does more damage than not posting at all.
The article explores the risks and considerations for a 'post on behalf of' feature in Enterprise Social Networks, in this case Yammer.
We are all working now in unfamiliar and unprecedented times. As we adjust to disruptions and working from home organisations are facing new needs to engage, coordinate and inform their people. Leaders need to lead remotely some for the very first time. You know your Yammer network is a way to communicate openly with the…

Simon Terry discusses the role of Enterprise Social Networks (ESNs) in a crisis. Terry speaks to Yammer, but the points apply to any ESN. I particularly like the emphasis on 'context'. ESNs allow leaders to extend their reach and be more visible, transparent and human in a crisis. This can help respond to people's heightened desire for certainty (ESN supporting continuous clarity) and relatedness (the ESN helping build connections, shared context/purpose and drive collaboration/knowledge sharing across boundaries and at speed).

The commonest error in plans to develop social collaboration in an organisation is the most obvious error. Too many plans aren't focused on the work. The value of ESNs and virtual communities is measured by the business outcomes, not 'activity'. Communities thrive when they are purpose driven. Their purpose also defines what success looks look and tells us what we will measure. I find it easier to define purpose and business outcomes at a community level. If you look ESN wide, then the purpose and business outcomes are quite broad/general (engagement, innovation, knowledge, talent). You need both, but a small group of people with a specific problem to solve provides real clarity of purpose and focus. These stories can be easier to tell and more compelling than selling the value of an enterprise wide platform.

After 10 years exploring the world, growing through unusual jobs, connecting deeply with strangers, I experienced a cultural shock when I joined a large, old, scientific company. First, I tried to cope. Then, I tried to change a few things. It didn't always work as hoped, but it was definitely instructive.

I don't know where to start with this wonderful talk by Celine Schillinger. You can watch this video for inspiration around talent and diversity. You can draw wonderful insights around the value of shared purpose and connection, for breaking down silos and giving people a voice and an opportunity to contribute to something bigger than themselves. You can watch it to see the potential for working out loud across networks through technology. Celine also reinforces the need for persistence and continuous learning as tools for adapting to a changing world.
Enterprise social networks are slowly (yes, very slowly) replacing email and stale intranets in all kinds of companies. Yet there are still senior managers out there who think that an internal "enterprise social network" like Yammer is for sharing funny
