Scientists have pointed to the role of social isolation in old age | Society News | Izvestia | 17.12.2025 | Centre for Population Change Connecting Generations in the news | Scoop.it
A study by the University of St. Andrews has shown that social isolation accelerates cognitive decline in old age. This discovery revealed that even in the absence of feelings of loneliness, people who are socially isolated face a more rapid decline in mental abilities. This was reported on December 16 by Medical Xpress magazine. Unlike loneliness, which is subjectively felt by people, social isolation is measured objectively through such parameters as sociability, participation in public organizations and religious events.
