A World Without Work

A World Without Work | Career Management | Scoop.it
The end-of-work argument has often been dismissed as the “Luddite fallacy,” an allusion to the 19th-century British brutes who smashed textile-making machines at the dawn of the industrial revolution, fearing the machines would put hand-weavers out of work. But some of the most sober economists are beginning to worry that the Luddites weren’t wrong, just premature.
Larry Chiagouris's insight:

Many of the jobs today will not exist 10 years from now.  This very thoughtful article describes a vision of the future that demands people have a plan to reinvent themselves to stay in the game.

The answer is yes: job opportunities for college-educated workers have never been greater, according to a new report.

The report, published this week by Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce, found that from 1967 to 2007, the share of high-skill management and professional jobs rose 14 per cent and that those jobs represent 35 per cent of all U.S. jobs.

How and Why You Should Use the Back Door to Get Your Next Job

Larry Chiagouris's insight:

This excerpt is a perfect description of the job market:  There are two job markets - the public market and the hidden job market. Jobs are filled in the public market with people who have “perfect” backgroundsand are willing to take lateral transfers.  The author notes that careers are built on people not being a perfect fit. I could not agree more.

Is this resume too long?

Is this resume too long? | Career Management | Scoop.it

I’ve always abided by the standard advice to have your resume focused at one page. However, due to my eight years of experience, more than a few people (including a headhunter), are saying that a one-page resume doesn’t give enough information.

Larry Chiagouris's insight:

This  author makes a good point about resume length and the fact that everyone is encouraged to limit a resume to one page.  I recommend that everyone have a one page version but also a much longer version to fit the opportunities. Often, at an interview, there is an opportunity to share a longer resume.

Not all of these deal breakers are deal breakers for everyone...but the one that will always kill an interview is the one that asks the candidate to explain what they did on a current or previous job. Am I Following Up Too Much In My Job Search?

Am I Following Up Too Much In My Job Search? | Career Management | Scoop.it
You know that your follow up game is so critical to job search. But you may be wondering, "Am I following up TOO much in my job search?" Here's your answer.
Larry Chiagouris's insight:

Best tip in this article is "A great approach is to ask the interviewer about their timeline for making a decision before you leave the interview."  Never by shy about asking the question as to "when can expect to hear back from you"  and then follow up a few days after that and never before that date.  Remember:  the job opportunity might be the most important topic in the world to the job seeker but the employer usually has many other fires to put out and getting back to a candidate will be high on the list but the list is usually long.

Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent."
