IBM announces mainframe Hadoop for Linux and flash storage - Inquirer

IBM announces mainframe Hadoop for Linux and flash storage
Inquirer
IBM also announced that it will offer Hadoop database software for Linux from Veristorm on System z mainframes, called Zdoop.
Greg Deckler's insight:

Something about this announcement strikes me as profoundly odd considering that one of the key drivers of Hadoop was to offer parallel processing on commoditized hardware in order to drive down price. So now IBM is offering the technology on expensive, proprietary hardware?  How does that make any sense?

Greg Deckler's insight:

This is a pretty cool demonstration of Microsoft's PolyBase but in general, it provides a really good demonstration of the power of EXTENDING your data warehouse to include unstructured data in a system like Hadoop.

Business Intelligence and Predictive Search Company SimpleQL Launches at ...
Greg Deckler's insight:

Interesting, signed up for their free test drive and it looks a lot like some of the natural language query stuff that I have seen in Power BI. This is really the future of self-service BI.  In my opinion, self-service BI is all just talk unless you can take it to the level of natural language search queries.

Why Hadoop Isn't Killing The Data Warehouse - ReadWrite | Business Intelligence Insights | Scoop.it
ReadWrite Why Hadoop Isn't Killing The Data Warehouse ReadWrite There are two realities here: One reality is that Hadoop, the open source software platform managed by the Apache Software Foundation, doesn't threaten yesterday's data warehouse...
Greg Deckler's insight:

This is largely correct about Hadoop's place with regards to the enterprise data warehouse.  However, I think the article focuses on the wrong thing with regards to Microsoft.  The article frets that IBM, Oracle and Teradata haven't really embraced Hadoop, but Microsoft has as their Parallel Data Warehouse and PolyBase shows.

Interesting, this seems similar to Microsoft's PolyBase and other products in the market that are focused on being able to use a single query against their own data stores as well as Hadoop, etc.

SQL Server 2012 PolyBase for Parallel Data Warehouse

David DeWitt discusses the PolyBase project developed at the Jim Gray Systems Lab at University Wisconsin-Madison.
Greg Deckler's insight:

I really like the concept of PolyBase.  Having to introduce yet more tools like Hive and Pig into an already cluttered landscape for BI developers is just a tough sell in terms of value to a business.  Being able to leverage existing skills but extend those skills into workloads handled best by Hadoop is much more palatable in my opinion.

Greg Deckler's insight:

I actually have a pending QSI blog article about NoSQL vs SQL and this article does a nice job of presenting things rationally.  I still shudder though when people bring up NoSQL "document stores", it just strikes me as Lotus Notes all over again, and, seriously, who wants that?

RT @biupdates: White Paper - Social Media Meets Business Intelligence http://t.co/UMGI3jhTjd
Greg Deckler's insight:

I am glad to finally see someone take on this subject because it is much ballyohooed in certain circles.  However, the white paper just reinforces my position that for the vast majority of companies, particularly those without a global reach and/or without consumer products or without a strong brand, the integration of social media into business intelligence really does not add much, if any, business value.
