Key Prevention Strategies:

Create an Illusion of Occupancy: Use smart timers for interior and exterior lights, as well as radios, to make the house look lived-in.

Regular Inspections and Maintenance: Visit the property frequently to ensure it is secure, or hire a property management service to do so. Keep the lawn mowed, weeds trimmed, and mail picked up to avoid signals of vacancy.

Visible Security Systems: Install security cameras, motion-activated lights, and alarm systems. Placing signs that indicate a security system is present can act as a deterrent.

Secure All Access Points: Ensure all doors and windows are locked, and consider adding deadbolts or padlocks to exterior doors.

Engage Neighbors: Ask trusted neighbors to watch for suspicious activity and report it to the police.

In Brevard County, Florida, you need a building permit for most construction, renovation, and major repair projects. This includes many common projects, such as: Renovating or remodeling homes Adding major additions Replacing windows and doors Installing swimming pools Working on plumbing, electrical, or HVAC Roofing projects You can apply for a building permit by: Checking your license status in the Brevard County Licensed Contractor Search Completing the Contractor Agreement to access online permit applications Submitting your application by email, mail, or in person You can call the Customer Service Call Center at (321) 633-2187 to schedule an appointment. You might need to hire a licensed contractor for your project. In Florida, you need a state contractors' license to: Construct a building or structure, Make structural alterations to load bearing walls, and Perform plumbing or air conditioning work. You can check the documentation requirements, inspections, and conditions for your project with the Brevard County Planning and Development Department.
