Originally known as “Decoration Day,” the tradition began after the Civil War as families and communities decorated the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers and flags. As we gather with family and friends today, let us also pause with gratitude and remembrance for those who never made it home — and for the families who carry their memory forward every day. Their sacrifice is woven into the fabric of our freedom, and it should never be forgotten.
