Of the numerous plant hallucinogens utilized by indigenous populations of the Amazon Basin, perhaps none is as interesting or complex, botanically, chemically, or ethnographically, as the hallucinogenic beverage known variously as ayahuasca, caapi, or yage. The beverage is most widely known as ayahuasca
I have a special video interview to share today that we filmed on a high jungle plateau in the Peruvian Amazon. But first, a little backstory.
Twenty two years ago, Dr. Jacques Mabit, a clinically trained physician from France opened up Takiwasi, a remote healing facility that specializes in treating drug addicts via natural medicines from the Amazon Rain Forest. Employing a variety of shamans from the surrounding region, the hybrid healing center has made quite a name for itself. Takiwasi boasts a 70% success rate in fully rehabilitating cocaine and heroin addicts who are willing to undergo the full 3 month treatment period.
"Ayahuasca is penetrating American society, and its highly successful people, way more than any other psychedelic," says Rick Doblin, the head of MAPS, the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, a nonprofit research association based in Santa Cruz, California. "The number of people who have had incredible experiences with ayahuasca, if they could all surface in the public sphere at the same time, it would be absolutely astonishing."

I just backed this one-man documentary, seems to have a solid foundation, and humble funding requirements. Please help the filmmaker make this documentary a reality
A study published in the Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory (March 2014) suggests that ancient humans did not use mind-altering substances for hedonistic pleasure, as we often do in the modern day. Elisa Guerra-Doce of the Universidad de Valladolid in Spain contends that the use of these substances was integral to the beliefs of prehistoric peoples, and that their …

The Shamanic View of Mental Illness In the shamanic view, mental illness signals “the birth of a healer,” explains Malidoma Patrice Somé. Thus, mental disorders are spiritual emergencies, spiritual crises, and need to be regarded as such to aid the healer in being born. What those in the West view as mental illness, the Dagara…
This article focuses on the legal history of Santo Daime (SD) though other lineages also have international profiles, the most widespread being the União de Vegetal (UDV). After bubbling and brewing away for millennia in the Amazon, ayahuasca began seeping out through the foliage at the turn of the 20th century. This powerful visionary tea was adopted by rubber tapper communities in what is now the Brazil-Bolivia-Peru borderland, and various sects emerged, including Santo Daime. A syncretic mix of Catholicism, Spiritualism, and indigenous shamanism, it spread to the rest of Brazil in the 80s, and today there are groups dotted around Latin American, Europe, and the US, as well as in Japan, India, Israel, and other places[i].
It angers me when I see the media portraying us as these sad broken down people. I believe we’re anything but. Sure there’s alcoholism here, but so does everywhere else. They only focus on the alcoholism. Why does White Clay, Nebraska have to be shown anytime someone is talking about Pine Ridge?
I want to show the world what I see when I look at Pine Ridge. I see that we have one of the most beautiful and unique cultures. Our people are so proud. Our elders are filled with history that they love talking about. We know when to laugh and how to laugh. I cherish and love all these things about Pine Ridge.
Ayahuasca tea, a hallucinogenic concoction from the Amazon, is gaining in popularity, with some comparing it to years of therapy in one night. Aaron Carapella couldn't find a map showing the original names and locations of Native American tribes as they existed before contact with Europeans. That's why the Oklahoma man designed his own map.
Hats off to Bob Morris for his ruthlessly whitebread, antiseptic article in the Sunday Styles section of the New York Times! Glamorizing ayahuasca with celebrity quotes and citing the LA Weekly in calling it "exceedingly trendy" is irrespon...
