Berkeley, CA (Monday May 11, 2015): Standing on Sacred Ground, a four-part documentary series, eight years in the making, on Indigenous struggles over sacred sites
Like the rest of the world, the fashion community has turned on to ayahuasca, a concoction of trendiness significant enough to warrant a cameo in Noah Baumbach’s latest ode to lost edges, While We’re Young. (In it, the hip young couple played by Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried drag Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts to an ayahuasca ceremony.) In its native South America, The New York Times reported recently, the drug is even becoming mainstream enough that it’s been administered to prisoners for rehabilitation purposes.
A psychedelic drink used for centuries in healing ceremonies is now attracting the attention of biomedical scientists as a possible treatment for depression. Researchers from Brazil last month published results from the first clinical test of a potential therapeutic benefit for ayahuasca, a South American plant-based brew1. Although the study included just six volunteers and no placebo group, the scientists say that the drink began to reduce depression in patients within hours, and the effect was still present after three weeks. They are now conducting larger studies that they hope will shore up their findings.
MINNEAPOLIS—A study published Monday in The Journal Of Child Psychology And Psychiatry has concluded that an estimated 98 percent of children under the age of 10 are remorseless sociopaths with little regard for anything other than their own egocentric interests and pleasures.
Methods: We assessed the psychedelic-induced changes in directionality of information flow during the acute effects of a psychedelic in humans. We measured modifications in connectivity of brain oscillations using transfer entropy (TE), a non-linear measure of directed functional connectivity based on information theory. Ten healthy male volunteers with prior experience with psychedelics participated in two experimental sessions. They received a placebo or a dose of ayahuasca, a psychedelic preparation containing the serotonergic 5-HT2A agonist N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT).
Results: the analysis showed significant changes in the coupling of brain oscillations between anterior and posterior recording sites. TE analysis showed that frontal sources decreased their influence over central, parietal and occipital sites. Conversely, sources in posterior locations increased their influence over signals measured at anterior locations. Exploratory correlations found that anterior-to-posterior TE decreases were correlated with the intensity of subjective effects, while the imbalance between anterior-to-posterior and posterior-to-anterior TE correlated with the degree of incapacitation experienced.
Conclusions: these results suggest that psychedelics induce a temporary disruption of neural hierarchies by reducing top-down control and increasing bottom-up information transfer in the human brain.
It’s only after I return home that I realize the work has only just begun. I’m disappointed to find all my everyday problems exactly where I left them, and humbly realize that drinking ayahuasca is just like going to school. I may possess new understanding and insights, but now it’s up to me to deal with my issues and consciously bring any positive changes I want into my life, and the world around me. - On ayahuasca http://t.co/9psIKulTZk
8 years ago I gave this talk Iquitos, some of the things I imagined became true, other's didn't. This July I'll be joining an an incredible lineup of speakers to give an updated version of the talk at Breaking Convention.
The purpose of this blog is to document the story of Semillas Ancestrales from our first arrival in Colombia. We hope to give an insight, not only into the documentary-making process, but also into our perceptions of the daily reality of life as we found it in the various places we visited.
EmmaSofia co-founder Teri Krebs interviewed about psychedelics and human rights on Huffington Post Live. From 5 May 2015, same day as EmmaSofia was featured ...
Ryan LeCompte’s study with MAPS will be the first of its kind, as it seeks to begin the work to develop ayahuasca into a legal prescription for PTSD (to be used alongside therapy).
This report follows the evolution of two of the region’s drug policy solutions: its health- and rights-based approach to drug treatment and harm reduction, and its model for safely legalizing the market for cannabis.
Analizamos las propiedades de esta sustancia, resultado de la cocción de varias plantas amazónicas y causante de experiencias psicodélicas, utilizada como vehículo de sanación por la medicina chamánica.
For a while now, and especially following the interviews that I recently conducted with twelve Shipibo healers (that I wrote about in my last blog post), I have been wondering about the Shipibo wo...
The provision of ayahuasca, a psychedelic brew used in the Amazon basin for centuries, to inmates on short furloughs reflects a quest to ease pressure on Brazil’s prison system.
