The following four documents represent chapters in what is an on-going investigation into a pre-Indo-European ethnocultural substrate of Europe, a substrate whose presence is clearly visible in the performance art encountered in many regions of contemporary Europe.

The research, led by a team from Exeter University and University College London, is believed to be the biggest yet to look into the effects of ayahuasca. It was based on 96,000 people.

For more than a decade, a close continuity, rather than opposition, has linked Viveiros de Castro’s “perspectivism” and Descola’s “animism”. Both theories are based on Amazonian ethnographic material and should be seen as theoretical constructions of the “Lowland” developed to explain the specicity of Amazonian ontologies. Today, both models exist independently of the south Amerindian data. In this paper, I will present some North-West Amazonian ritual and mythological material that illustrates the first, as well as the second theoretical point of view. The main aim of this paper is to show that general cognitive phenomena involved in the act of perception, such as anthropomorphism and analogical projection, are able to give an account of some Amazonian ontologies, especially if we draw iconographical expressions of past and present societies into the discussion.
Debbora Battaglia’s essay opens portals to entire worlds that turn around plants, sites in which people and their attendant techniques, technologies, and magic get caught in the spiralling whorl of plant beings and doings. Plants are, like their roots, entangling.Nourishing, aromatic, sensitive, and sentient, plants entice entire ecologies of other creatures to participate in their care and their propagation: they have the know-how to entrain others in service of their rhythms, their wiles, and desires (Hustak and Myers 2012). And, as it turns out, people might be the best equipped of all other creatures, to respond to their every whim

Terence McKenna is among the most-sampled voices in the world of psychedelic electronic music. I actually suspect he is the single most-sampled individual, but am willing to admit that my position on this may be skewed by my own availability heuristic as his archivist. I would actually be quite interested to hear from any…
‘Tawai ’ is the word the indigenous hunter-gatherers of Borneo use to describe their connection with nature. It’s also a new film about human potential by explorer Bruce Parry. He talks about balancing scepticism and spirituality, why he gave up sex, and the Siberian mountain named after him
Archaeology and indigenous history of Native Amazonian peoples in the Upper Xingu region of Brazil reveal unexpectedly complex regional settlement pat-terns and large-scale transformations of local landscapes over the past mil-lennium. Mapping and excavation of archaeological structures document pro-nounced human-induced alteration of the forest cover, particularly in relationto large, dense late-prehistoric settlements (circa 1200 to 1600 A.D.). Thefindings contribute to debates on human carrying capacity, population size andsettlement patterns, anthropogenic impacts on the environment, and the im-portance of indigenous knowledge, as well as contributing to the pride of placeof the native peoples in this part of the Amazon
The Ju/’hoansi people of the Kalahari have always been fiercely egalitarian. They hate inequality or showing off, and shun formal leadership institutions. It’s what made them part of the most successful, sustainable civilisation in human history
