Lyla June is a Diné singer, writer, and activist. Her music and message centers around intergenerational and inter-ethnic healing, as well as Indigenous philosophy. She is a scholar of global cycles of violence that eventually gave rise to the Witch Burnings in Europe as well as The Native American Holocaust. She graduated with honors from Stanford University with a degree in Environmental Anthropology, and recently completed a Masters in American Indian Education from the University of New Mexico. She is a co-founder of The Taos Peace and Reconciliation Council, which works to heal intergenerational trauma and ethnic division in northern New Mexico. Lyla and Eric talk about the traumatic roots of the settler colonial paradigm, how our guiding stories and sense of self are necessarily rooted in homeland, and how delicate and brittle American society has become without a place-based identity, among other things.
Eleanor Hancock is the director of White Awake, a project that brings mindfulness and contemplative spiritual practice to white affinity work focused on racism, white supremacy, and collective liberation. She has trained directly with Joanna Macy in the Work that Reconnects, and integrates this embodied, deep ecology practice into her facilitation of integrative, race-focused group work. She and Eric talk about how white privilege is a cheap buy off used to coax white American society to support the existing economic hierarchy, how a lack of empathy is implicated in colonialism and the spread of empire, and Eleanor’s upcoming online workshop Before We Were White, which explores these topics in greater detail
Tim DeChristopher is best known for disrupting a Bureau of Land Management oil and gas auction in December of 2008 where he outbid oil companies for parcels around Arches and Canyonlands National Parks in Utah with no intention of paying for the parcels. Tim founded the climate justice organization Peaceful Uprising in Salt Lake City, and most recently founded the Climate Disobedience Center. He and Eric talk about his experience using civil disobedience as a tool in climate change activism, the need for activists to prioritize healing their personal trauma within their activist work, and the source of civil disobedience’s power, among other things.
White Awake is an online platform, and growing network of trainers and practitioners, focused on popular education for people who are socialized as “white”. We believe this is important because white people are socialized, and awarded limited types of privilege, to align ourselves with the ruling class at everybody’s expense. White Awake addresses the particularities of this socialization with tools and resources that prioritizes spiritual practice, emotional process, compassion, and curiosity alongside historical analysis and intellectual rigor.
