This film tells the unlikely story of Randy Borman, a white American, who became a leader of an indigenous community in the Amazon. He dedicated his life to defend what is dear to his people — the forest. His personal story illuminates the Cofán people’s story and their struggle to survive.
Milan Scheidegger is one of the most interesting young researchers in psychedelics, because he integrates several different perspectives. He’s a clinical psychiatrist at the University of Zurich, who’s spent a decade studying the effect of psychedelics on subjects in a laboratory, and on a meditation retreat. He’s also done field-work on the use of psychedelics in indigenous rituals, and is preparing the first study of the effects of ayahuasca in Switzerland. He’s written a philosophy masters on deep ecology. And he’s a musician, who’s worked with the Sound Trance Institute on using music to induce trance states. He brings all these perspectives together: music, nature, psychedelics and healing, in the Re-Connect Foundation, which he hopes will be a leading Western psychedelic therapy clinic. Like many psychedelic researchers I interview, he strikes me as a warm, kind and humble person committed to relieving human suffering and exploring consciousness. In the first part of our interview, we compared western psychedelic lab research to American indigenous use of psychedelics, and discuss what can be translated from indigenous experience into a western context. I’ll publish part 2 next week.
Scholars continue to debate if the images emblazed upon arcane frescos depict psychedelic mushrooms and their intended use as sacrament. And they find common ground with the prayerful ingestion of entheogens to help one connect to the divine.
I was 16 when I first arrived in the Owens Valley, or Payahuunadu (the land of flowing water) as the Paiute Shoshone people of this land call it, for the Youth Rite of Passage program with the School of Lost Borders. I was immediately in awe of the surrounding mountains, the expanse of sagebrush, and the small towns that dot the 395 corridor. Six other youth and I were guided through a ceremony that forever changed my life and continues to inform how I see myself, my community, and the world we are a part of.
Ben and Julie share similar paths in a similar field. Both doctors, writers and psychedelic researchers. In this informal discussion, they will examine the pitfalls and pleasures of psychedelic research, debunk some of the myths and fears surrounding the public’s misconception of psychedelics and (hopefully!) inspire young people to choose this most rewarding – and challenging – of careers!
Based on research for my book Shadows Across the Moon: Outlaws, Freaks, Shamans and the Making of Ibiza Clubland this short talk will trace the unbroken continuum that runs from 1960s Ibiza to today in terms of the wide-ranging investigations into psychedelic consciousness that have been of consistent interest to the island’s international community. 1960s Ibiza saw psychonauts pioneer the importance of ‘set and setting’ and popularise entheogens, meditation, macrobiotics, yoga consciousness, Eastern influenced neopagan trance culture and even trepanation. Later, when the Osho community helped disseminate MDMA on open-air island nightclub terraces the Second Summer of Love was born and exported. Now entheogens such as ayahuasca, DMT and psychoactive toad extracts are also of wide interest within this unusually open-minded community. The continued interest in various forms of advanced consciousness and lifestyle is as ever a key aspect of the character of Ibiza’s international resident demographic.

In Colombia, ethnobotanical studies regarding plant cultural significance (CS) in tropical dry forests are scarce and mainly focused on the Caribbean region. Different authors have indicated that the plants with the most uses are those of greater cultural importance. Additionally, gender differences in knowledge and interest in natural resources has been widely recorded. This study evaluated the cultural significance of plants in the Doche community, in the Department of Huila. Furthermore, it evaluates the richness of plant knowledge among local inhabitants, looking for testing the hypothesis that the CS of plants positively correlates to the number of uses people inform about, and that there are significant differences on the richness of ethnobotanical knowledge between men and women in this community. The ethnobotanical categories: “food,” “condiment,” “economy,” “fodder,” “firewood,” “timber”, “medicine,” and “others” were established to carry out semi-structured interviews, social cartography, and ethnobotanical walks. The frequency of mention was calculated as a measure of CS. The richness of knowledge of each collaborator was obtained. Non-parametric tests were performed to determine whether differences between the numbers of mentioned species existed between genders and ethnobotanical categories. Finally, Pearson correlation tests determined the relationship between CS and the number of ethnobotanical categories. A hundred useful species were registered in crops and forests. The most abundant categories were medicinal (45 species), firewood (30), and fodder (28). The most culturally significant species according to frequency of mention were Pseudosamanea guachapele, Guazuma ulmifolia, Manihot esculenta, and Musa balbisiana. The species with the most registered uses (five) were Guazuma ulmifolia and Gliricidia sepium. We found a correlation between CS and the number of uses per ethnobotanical category, but no significant difference between genders regarding ethnobotanical knowledge. Frequency of mention provides relevant information about the CS of species. Furthermore, it aids to establish sustainable use of tropical dry forests without loss of resources parting from strategies designed from within the Doche community and based on their ethnobotanical knowledge. We found that the number of uses of a plant is correlated with its degree of cultural importance. On the other hand, no significant differences were found between genders regarding ethnobotanical knowledge; that is, both men and women have similar roles in the community, which allows them to recognize the same uses per species.

Corrine gets into her visceral experiences of physical healing with unique "bee beings" during her Ayahuasca experiences. These same healing creatures returned to her in several ceremonies even at different centers! She describes extraordinary physical healing work performed by these amazing beings and how this impacted her life. We also get into the power of thoughts and how our thoughts, intentions and beliefs affect us and others. It's a rich discussion full of insights and an exploration of mental health in the modern conventional world and how it contrasts with these incredibly loving and magical plant medicines.
Rabbi Harry Rozenberg has a discussion with Dr. Gerald Schroeder (Believe in God in 5 Minutes (Scientific Proof)) regarding the role of DMT in the Biblical Narrative. DMT is considered to be one of the most psychoactive chemicals known to humanity, and a plant containing it is found throughout the Torah
Leaning on previous and on-going studies imaging the human brain on psilocybin, LSD, MDMA and DMT with different brain imaging modalities, this talk will attempt to summarise our current thinking on how psychedelic drugs work in the brain to produce their acute and longer-term effects. These insights may help us explain the subjective experience of the psychedelic trip and its aftermath, including its after-glow and enduring impact on personality and outlook. In summary, it’s all about connection (man).
Psychotic Break, Shamanic Initiation, Or Alien Encounter?
“We are part of a symbiotic relationship with something which disguises itself as an alien invasion, so as not to alarm us.” - Terence McKenna. Most people in the psychedelic community are aware of the Experiment at La Chorrera, a shorthand signature for an encounter with high weirdness that overtook my brother Terence and me while seeking an exotic hallucinogen in the Colombian Amazon in the spring of 1971. These events have been chronicled in our books, True Hallucinations (1993), and The Brotherhood of the Screaming Abyss (2011). The story has taken on an almost mythopoeic quality. But what was really going on? It has many elements in common with classic alien abduction episodes, but with a psychedelic twist. In this talk I will examine E@LC from this perspective. Still trying to sort it out after all these years.
An overview of the ancient high-level practice of dark retreat meditation will be described across spiritual and indigenous traditions. The goals of dark retreat practice include the enhancement of self-realization towards enlightenment through entering altered states of consciousness and the awakening of all senses. This chapter is rooted in an earth- based integrative philosophical perspective of transpersonal psychology. The neurobiological impact of prolonged darkness and the bodily release of endogenous empathogenic and psychoactive substances (Melatonin, Pinoline, 5-MeO-DMT, and DMT) will be outlined. The relevance and universal occurrence of the mythological-archetypal dimension related to darkness will be illustrated including examples such as the creation myths, the archetypes of the trickster and the Great Mother. To provide some texture, a brief personal account of a dark retreat experience related to a prior near-death-encounter will be shared.

We need to acknowledge our profound ignorance and begin to craft a culture that will be based on some notion of communalism and interspecies symbiosis rather than survival of the fittest. These concepts are available and fully elaborated by, say, a biologist like Lynn Margulis, but they're still not the central paradigm. They’re still not organizing our research or driving our culture and our cultural evolution. That’s what I’m frustrated with. There’s so much good intellectual work, so much good philosophy, so much good biology—how can we make that more central to what we do?
