Nepal: A short history of mushroom cultivation in Nepal

Nepal: A short history of mushroom cultivation in Nepal | The Asian Food Gazette. | Scoop.it

Mushroom cultivation was initiated by the Division of Plant Pathology,
Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC) in 1974. The growing
technology for white button mushroom was developed during that early
period and extended to general farmers starting in 1977. It utilized the
synthetic media of paddy straw, which is harvested twice a year in
Kathmandu. Of course, a few farmers grew mushrooms before the
introduction of the technology but the number of button mushroom
growers has increased year after year thanks to the spread of the
technology.
The growing technology to grow oyster mushroom using chopped straw packets was introduced to the farmers
in 1984, and since then mushroom cultivation has become more popular among farmers. These two kinds of
mushroom cultivation systems have been employed by farmers in about 25 districts within Nepal. The Center for
Agricultural Technology (CAT) has recently introduced straw mushroom (Volvoriella volvacea) cultivation in the
Terai districts and shiitake in the hill districts and has been instructing farmers how to grow them since 2001.

Did alder (Alnus) fires trigger rice cultivation in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, East China?

Did alder (Alnus) fires trigger rice cultivation in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, East China? | The Asian Food Gazette. | Scoop.it

ScienceDirect.com - Palaeoworld -Abstract
It remains debatable as to how the prehistoric human communities managed the environment to enable the initial cultivation of rice during the early Neolithic in the coastal lower reaches of the Yangtze River, East China. Previous studies proposed an environmental context for the first rice cultivation at Kuahuqiao, Hangzhou, based on an archaeological sedimentary microfossil record that had been well-dated using radiocarbon methods. Those studies suggested that early humans began burning the predominantly alder scrub in a local swampy wetland, starting about 7750 cal. yr BP, which permitted the start of dedicated rice (Oryza) cultivation. Here we present a new, finer-detailed pollen-phytolith-microscopic charcoal record from the same locality. Our result reveals that local woods dominated by oak (Quercus) and pine (Pinus) were targeted for burning by early cultivators before the start of rice agriculture.

Punjab: MUSHROOM CULTIVATION A PROMISING OCCUPATION | The Asian Food Gazette. | Scoop.it

Mushroom cultivation helps in alleviating protein energy malnutrition, improving economic standard of the masses, imparting diversification and in addressing the problems of quality food, health, and environment related issues.” These views were expressed by the Microbiology experts of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). They divulged, “At present, mushroom production in the country is nearly 1,20,000 tonnes, in which the Punjab state contributes about 45-50 per cent, which is mainly through 400 odd seasonal growers as well as a few industrial units growing mushrooms under controlled environment of temperature and relative humidity.” Thus, the growers can now cultivate mushrooms round the year by selecting suitable varieties recommended by the PAU for winter and summer seasons, they added.
