This foundation is one of the main reasons why a story that was composed several millennia ago has survived, and still plays an important role in Indian society today. These lessons are put forth through the long string of moral conundrums that all of the story's main characters encounter.

In this lesson, students will learn about Angkor Wat and its place in Cambodian, and Southeast Asian, history. Students will attempt to “read” the temple, in a way which resembles the reading of a primary document, to gain insight into this history. In addition, this lesson can also supplement world history lessons which focus on the migration of ideas and religions, such as the movement of both Hinduism and Buddhism to Southeast Asia.

In the 13th century, a young Venetian named Marco Polo set out with his father and uncle on a great adventure. Following a series of trade routes, they traveled across the vast continent of Asia and became the first Europeans to visit the Chinese capital (modern Beijing). Marco so impressed the reigning emperor of China, Kublai Khan, that he was appointed to the imperial court. For the next 17 years, Marco was sent on missions to many parts of Kublai's sprawling empire. The Polos finally returned to Venice via the sea route. Marco later wrote a book about his experiences, which inspired new generations of explorers to travel to the exotic lands of the East.

This unit focuses on the stories of Mahatma Gandhi and Mao Zedong. It is also a model for studying other political leaders, such as Ho Chi Minh and Aung San Suu Kyi. Students will learn about how people become leaders, how they inspire others to come together and live as nations. In Asia, the stories of nation building include mythic legends and true sagas of long struggles against colonial powers. There are tales of inspired leadership, and proud accounts of national rebirth from the wreckage of war or revolution. These stories illuminate startling differences and striking similarities in the nation-building experiences of different countries.
