Ed Sheeran’s Tiny Desk (home) concert from 2021 was a huge moment for NPR Music. During a time of uncertainty, his show — now at nearly 15 million views — honored the intimate nature of our platform while also reimagining his work. We knew that when the time was right, Sheeran would step behind the real Desk and that time is now.

Michael Mayo uses every muscle within his throat when he sings. From his deep baritone chest to wonderfully fluttering head voice, he joyfully bends notes to his will and for our enjoyment at the Tiny Desk.

Strobe lights—those which emit rapid flashes of very bright light—are often used in nightclubs at moments of heightened intensity. Their flickering regularity becomes hypnotic. They create an illusion that makes objects or people appear to be moving in slow motion or even standing still. They disorient the brain's ability to track movement and continuity, often leaving ghostly ‘afterimages’ after you look away. All these effects inspired Strobe.

The quartet of saxophonist Chris Cheek, keyboardist Rembrandt Frerichs, bassist Mark Haanstra and drummer Jorge Rossy is rightly regarded as a supergroup. Playing only original compositions, rich in harmony and color, these inventive musicians explore improvisation to the fullest.

Wolfgang Muthspiel and his trio with Scott Colley on bass and Brian Blade on drums goes into its third recording-venture swinging, setting the stage for what may be the group’s most adventurous trio recording with a delicate reading of Keith Jarrett’s “Lisbon Stomp”. Throughout the album however, the Austrian guitarist and his American cohorts turn the spotlight towards Wolfgang’s captivating originals, touching on balladic lyricism (“Pradela”, “Traversia”), subtle folk infusions (“Strumming”, “Flight”), as well as oblique chamber jazz (“Weill You Wait”) and twangy rock and roll (“Roll”).

This Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, NPR Music celebrates artists from all corners of Latinidad with an 'El Tiny' takeover.

The song that opens Chuwi’s Tiny Desk is quick, coy and questioning. In staggered vocals, keys and percussion, the Puerto Rican band gently tells a story about a life well-lived, but something lingers. “Que me faltara,” they all sing. What am I missing? This is a common theme throughout Chuwi’s music — that the members love their family, their island, their home — but, like many Puerto Ricans, they still seek something better: “un guarapo de jengibre y un Puerto Rico libre.”
