"Migration is not a new phenomenon in the Middle East and this is especially the case for the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) that since the oil boom of the 1970s have relied heavily on both skilled and unskilled foreign labour to develop their economies. The Middle East accounts nowadays for over ten percent of the world’s total migrants with the oil-rich countries of the Persian Gulf hosting the highest concentration of migrant workers in the world. Migration in the region has a diverse face with the presence of legal migrants, undocumented migrants, refugees and special groups. The growing interest of governments, academic institutions and the media, has produced in the last years a noticeable amount of specialised literature (both in Arabic and in other languages) that specifically addressing Middle East international migration.
