Legs de l’histoire, les forêts anciennes sont aujourd’hui rares et souvent méconnues. Elles constituent pourtant un patrimoine extraordinaire, d’une haute valeur scientifique et écologique, mais également économique, sociale et culturelle.
Connaître et faire connaître ces forêts anciennes, leurs valeurs, mieux les préserver, maintenir au mieux leurs qualités dans la gestion productive est un enjeu capital. Ces forêts sont également un élément clé de résilience de la biodiversité forestière face aux changements climatiques.

Les scieries ont surtout besoin de bois de moins de 40 cm, mais les gros bois gardent tous leurs avantages. Dans cette perspective il serait erroné de vouloir raccourcir la durée des concepts de production.
