U.S. egg prices increased again last month to reach a new record-high of $6.23 per dozen despite President Donald Trump’s predictions, a drop in wholesale prices and no egg farms having bird flu outbreaks.

The H7N9 strain of bird flu was detected on a poultry farm in Mississippi. The infection of 47,654 commercial chickens was confirmed on March 13 by the World Organization for Animal Health.

Sky-high egg prices have drawn renewed attention to the bird flu outbreak, which has caused more than 166 million wild and domestic birds in the U.S. to die since it began.

The spread of bird flu to other livestock and humans has D.C. area farmers -- and their neighbors -- on edge. Some of them are helping to track the spread.

Greg Herbruck knew 6.5 million of his birds needed to die, and fast.
But the CEO of Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch wasn’t sure how the family egg producer (one of the largest in the U.S., in business for over three generations) was going to get through it, financially or emotionally.

The United States has reported its first outbreak of H5N9 bird flu in poultry on a duck farm in California, the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) said on Monday.

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) officially declared a state of emergency over bird flu concerns Wednesday, a step he said was necessary to prevent the spread of the virus. The bird flu disease – known as Type A H5N1 – has already appeared among dairy cattle in 16 states and has been spreading rapidly...

Bird flu has officially jumped from birds to infect two people in Arizona, AZFamily reported Friday. It adds another state to the list where the disease has spread. State health officials said the transition impacted two workers at a commercial facility where infected birds were processed.

A second case of bird flu has been found in a human, US health authorities announced Wednesday, less then two months after the first one as an outbreak of the disease circulates widely among dairy cows.

WASHINGTON — The deadliest outbreak of bird flu in U.S. history is prompting growing concern in Congress, and Department of Agriculture researchers are awaiting the preliminary results of four trials of vaccines for poultry.
