Trump ignited the controversy when he defended his real-estate program by saying Curiel has an inherent conflict of interest because of his Mexican heritage, because the candidate has proposed building a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border to curb illegal immigration.
Curiel was born in Indiana, and Trump's complaint has been criticized by Republican leaders, legal experts, and other commentators.
No one should be surprised by this unfortunate decision. Obviously, Mr. Trump's intense need to make his point has outweighted sound, political judgement. Then again, Mr. Trump isn't a politician. He's getting his political education on the job (OJT), but that doesn't leave him a lot of room for more errors.
The image of self-sabotage aside, it's a good bet that the nightmares for Trump's supporters across the country are just now coming to life, and no one knows what a hit his brand will take the next time he makes a bad decision.
