Raspberry Pi or Arduino? One Simple Rule to Choose the Right Board | #Maker #MakerED #MakerSpaces #Coding

Raspberry Pi or Arduino? One Simple Rule to Choose the Right Board | #Maker #MakerED #MakerSpaces #Coding | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Here at Make: we see new, ingenious projects from our community every day. Many of these are made possible by the use of development boards. However, if you’re new to the subject, it can be confusing to parse out the differences between boards and the advantages of using one over another.

We’ve created this super simple guide to help you get started. Then, when you’re ready check out Arduino Uno and Raspberry Pi Starter Kits, which come with all the goodies you need for your inaugural projects. Not sure you want all those peripherals yet? Start with the essentials: Grab the board of your choice and bring yourself up to speed with our Getting Started With series for Arduino and for Raspberry Pi.

Is there a simple rule of thumb to help me decide?

Yes, there is! Think about what you want your project to do. If you can describe it with less than two ‘and’s, get an Arduino. If you need more than two ‘and’s, get a Raspberry Pi.

Examples:
“I want to monitor my plants and have them Tweet me when they need water.” That can best be done by an Arduino.

“I want to monitor my plants and have them Tweet me when they need water and check the National Weather Service, and if the forecast is for fair weather, turn on the irrigation system and if the forecast is for rain, do nothing.” That would best be handled by a Raspberry Pi.

Isn’t that rule of thumb oversimplifying what is actually a much more complex issue?

Yes. That’s what a rule of thumb is.

Look, this is confusing! Just tell me which one I should buy!

An Arduino. It’s a system designed for beginners.

This is the new Raspberry Pi Zero W - with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth | #Coding #Maker #MakerED #MakerSpaces  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The Raspberry Pi Foundation has unveiled a new model of the tiny computing board, the Raspberry Pi Zero W, which adds Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, priced at $10.

In November 2015 the Raspberry Pi Zero was released - a tiny $5 entry-level Raspberry Pi, cheap enough that the Foundation even gave it away free with its MagPi magazine (if you could managed to grab one quick enough). Since then the tiny board has been used in projects from miniature arcade cabinets to electric skateboards, but many of these projects need wireless connections which means adding a wireless dongle and that can easily cost more than the Zero.

The new Zero W uses the same Cypress CYW43438 wireless chip as Raspberry Pi 3 Model B to provide 802.11n wireless LAN and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity.

1.000.000 Mini-PCs verschenkt: BBC verteilt gratis Raspberry-Pi-Klone | Coding | Europe | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Raspberry Pi Zero W rival: New $10 Orange Pi 2G-IoT hooks into mobile networks | #MakerED #Coding | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Now, a new Orange Pi model, dubbed the Orange Pi 2G-IoT, goes in the opposition direction on connectivity, giving builders a 2G antenna for Internet of Things applications, as well as offering wireless LAN and Bluetooth for a price of $10.

The Orange Pi 2G-IoT goes up against the recently released Raspberry Pi Zero W, which also costs $10, and offers wireless LAN and Bluetooth but not mobile network access.

The new Orange Pi board features a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A5 32-bit processor with a Vivante GC860 graphics processor, and 256MB RAM.

It also supports 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, and features a Raspberry Pi-compatible 40-pin GPIO connector.

Other features include video and audio inputs and outputs, and USB 2.0 ports. The 2G antenna supports GSM/GPRS data connections and there's, of course, a slot to insert a SIM card.

The device can run Android, Ubuntu, Debian, or Raspberry Pi, according to the Orange Pi 2G-IoT listing on Aliexpress.

While the Orange Pi 2G-IoT costs the same as the Raspberry Pi Zero W, the Raspberry board has double the RAM, at 512MB.

Here's the BBC's Micro:bit, Raspberry Pi competitor | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The project is a collaboration between the broadcaster and partners including ARM, Barclays, element14, Freescale, Lancaster University, Microsoft, Nordic Semiconductor, Samsung and the Wellcome Trust.

Every year 7 (6th grade) child in the UK will receive a BBC Micro:bit for free. That means up to 1 million devices will be distributed in the first batch.

The Pi-Top, A Raspberry Pi-Powered Laptop, Is Hitting The Crowdfunding Trail | Coding

The Pi-Top, A Raspberry Pi-Powered Laptop, Is Hitting The Crowdfunding Trail | Coding | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

We last met this laptop when it was still a gleam in a group of students’ eye. Now it’s a fully operational crowdfunding project and they’re looking for $80,000 to begin shipping the devices.

The kit itself costs $249 with a motherboard or $200 without. You can also simply print your own case and parts and stick your own hardware into it, but where’s the fun in that?

The kit should ship in May 2015 and we’ll be looking at it live in London next week at Disrupt. It’s a cute, clever little project and could be a good first computer or education machine for those looking for something inexpensive, powerful, and unique.
