Vivalist's curator insight,

yet another list of great tools to teach computer programming to kids. Good resources there.
I tried some of the hour of code exercises with my 6years old and it's great... she gets it right away and the benefits are instantaenous. She felt "empowered" and pride of her achievment. Very well designed so kids are never overwhelmed by info and instructions.

Maybe not exactly about design abilities, but interesting thing about eLearning how to code.

This 2014/2015 school year’s first term is about to expire. After approximately 8 lessons of coding (less than 8 hours of work), and one week for project development (homework time) the final results are really awesome, taking in count that:
Students didn’t have any previous knowledge about coding.
They didn’t know anything about game strategies.

Fueled by an incredible demand in the workforce for proficient programmers and the need to teach critical thinking skills, the coding movement in schools has exploded. Furthermore, we all communicate through technology, so we should at least know the basic premise of coding because the gadget sitting in our pocket, or on our desk, should not be a mysterious black box to us or our students. Just like writing, multimedia, art, and music are mediums to show ideas, coding can be another form of expression.

first met Spark this summer when it raised more than $560,000 on Kickstarter for its Arduino-like Spark Core Wi-Fi connector kit. It subsequently went on to raise a $4.9 million Series A round and launch a cloud OS to power its Internet of Things (IoT) enabling hardware. Now it’s back with the Spark Photon, a postage stamp sized Wi-Fi development board for building connected devices.
The Spark Photon costs just $19 and is so small it comes packaged in a matchbox. It’s designed for putting together prototype devices. Once you’ve finalized your prototype, Spark is making the Spark P0 ($10) and P1 ($12) Wi-Fi enabled modules available for integration directly into a product.

The UK’s Brighton-based MakerClub is important in that it is one of the 3D printing technology companies that recognizes how important it is to invest in the future: our kids.
Since they will be the inventors and makers of the future, it’s important to expose our children to grade-level appropriate technology and science as soon as possible — and not only does it enrich their minds, but as they grow, so will the technology. The world of 3D printing is still in its infancy, and it doesn’t take a crystal ball to know that future generations are going to take this amazing — and fun — technology and run with the winds of change.
MakerClub is involved in a handful of different projects for school-aged kids right now (including the Carduino, a customizable remote-controlled car that kids can 3D print themselves, which we reported on recently), and just recently received an £80,000 grant from the UK government to design a school-age online resource for programming, 3D design, and electronic engineering. Translating to about $126,000, these funds were provided to MakerClub as one of fifteen companies selected as finalists out of hundreds of applicants in the ‘Learning Technologies: Design for Impact’ competition sponsored by the UK government. (For a full list including the other finalists, click here.)

Across the country, programming training courses and education providers are looking to create closer ties to build better training modules for would-be coders and software developers. Earlier in November, Codecademy launched ReSkillUSA along with Thinkful, to reach out to the same community of under-employed workers. With the tagline “Make the skills gap end with you,” ReSkillUSA falls in line with the LaunchCode mission, if not its exact methods.
Still, both are no-cost or low-cost options for getting an education in programming, and taken together with a new credentialing program that General Assembly has launched in concert with a number of large technology and industrial companies, the new initiatives could be promising for future employment. Especially since the General Assembly credentialing tests are open to anyone.

Next week, Bitsbox is going to launch a Kickstarter campaign to take its service to the next level. While the website is free to use, the business that Lininger and fellow ex-Googler Aidan Chopra, also previously of SketchUp, are building is a subscription-based “box of the month” club.
The boxes will include an activity book with over a dozen apps to build.
The boxes come with collectible trading cards of apps with lines of code on the back. Kids pick the project they want to do, then go online to type out the code and run the app on the screen on the virtual tablet. They can then send the app to their device or share it on social media.
