The current political momentum around skills is certainly welcomed by those whom, as European Schoolnet, strongly believe in the importance of skills and education to thrive in society.
European Schoolnet is a Brussels-based network of 30 European Ministries of Education. We aim to bring innovation in teaching and learning. We therefore welcome the launch of the New Skills Agenda by the European Commission and support the priorities that are set within the agenda, in particular the emphasis on the need to develop digital skills.
From digital skills to the safe and responsible use of online technology, through the wide variety of ICT in education projects we are involved in, it is clear to us how much digital skills are needed for citizens to actively participate in today's digital society, and how central they are in shaping the personal and professional future of a connected generation. Our leading role in a number of European initiatives in the area of STEM and of Key Competences for lifelong learning has further strengthened our belief that investing in the development and recognition of a wide variety of skills is beneficial to learners’ personal development, active citizenship, social inclusion, and employment.
European Schoolnet looks forward to supporting the New Skills Agenda for Europe in the four major areas outlined below. We believe that our network of stakeholders (Ministries of Education, schools, teachers, researchers, and industry partners) together with our targeted actions, tools, platforms, and services are able to contribute to bring about change. - Foster the development and assessment of key competences

A new, more inclusive vision of education and training up to 2020

A draft joint report by the Commission published today calls for strengthening cooperation in education and training up to 2020 and especially to promote social inclusion.
The Commission is today proposing to strengthen cooperation at European level in the field of education and training up to 2020. Its draft of a joint report by the Commission and Member States published today calls for making European education and training systems more socially inclusive, as part of the wider efforts to tackle radicalisation following the 2015 attacks in Paris and Copenhagen. The report proposes a sharper policy focus to better address the most pressing challenges facing our society. The six new priorities identified in the report include improving people's skills and employment prospects and creating open, innovative and digital learning environments, while at the same time cultivating fundamental values of equality, non-discrimination and active citizenship.

New measures to boost key competences and digital skills, as well as the European dimension of education Brussels, 17 January 2018
To follow up on the Gothenburg Summit, the European Commission has today adopted new initiatives to improve key competences and digital skills of European citizens, to promote common values and pupils' awareness of the functioning of the European Union.
The new proposals come only two months after European Heads of State and Government discussed education, training and culture at the Gothenburg Summit in November 2017. They are intended to reduce socio-economic inequalities, whilst sustaining competitiveness in order to build a more united, stronger and more democratic Europe. The three initiatives proposed by the Commission are: 1. A Council Recommendation on Key Competences for Lifelong Learning: Building on the Recommendation on Key Competences adopted in 2006, this proposal brings forward important updates reflecting the rapid evolution of teaching and learning since then. It aims to improve the development of key competences of people of all ages throughout their lives and to provide guidance to Member States on how to achieve this objective. A particular focus is placed on promoting entrepreneurial drive and innovation-oriented mindsets in order to unlock personal potential, creativity and self-initiative. Moreover, the Commission is recommending steps to foster competences in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and motivate more young people to embark on a career in these fields. The proposals made today should also be seen as part of the answer to urgently improve European education systems to face the many challenges highlighted in the latest PISA survey. More generally, the measures will support Member States in better preparing learners for changing labour markets and for active citizenship in more diverse, mobile, digital and global societies. 2. A Digital Education Action Plan that outlines how the EU can help people, educational institutions and education systems better adapt to life and work in an age of rapid digital change by: making better use of digital technology for teaching and learning; developing the digital competences and skills needed for living and working in an age of digital transformation; and improving education through better data analysis and foresight.
Initiatives include supporting schools with high-speed broadband connections, scaling up a new self-assessment tool for schools on the use of technology for teaching and learning (SELFIE) and a public awareness campaign on online safety, media literacy and cyber hygiene. 3. A Council Recommendation on common values, inclusive education and the European dimension of teaching: This initiative proposes ways in which education can help young people understand the importance of and adhere to common values set out in Article 2 of the Treaty of the European Union. It aims at strengthening social cohesion and contributing to fight the rise of populism, xenophobia, divisive nationalism and the spreading of fake news. The proposal also strengthens inclusive education to promote quality education for all pupils as well as the European dimension of teaching, so children also learn about Europe's common heritage and diversity and get a good understanding of the functioning of the EU. To support these aims, the Commission will take steps to increase virtual exchanges among schools, notably through the successful e-Twinning network, and boost school mobility through the Erasmus+ programme. Theatre, a vector of choice? Theatre, is a text, a writing, an idea, a union of words, expressions, pulled from a sheet of paper, embodied in reality. Emotions expressed and interactions that are played between the protagonists of a moment. The text, first dissected to reveal all its meaning and its implications, must be stored or memorized prior to be interpreted. Played: the secret is finally exposed, play, like a child, think and believe it is true and keep that memory implanted. Learning through theatre is a wonderful method in the literal sense of the word: Students do not feel the constraints of learning and do not suffer from slow and often tedious methods. It is active.
Their bodies start to move in accordance with their senses, their minds. They act. Thus, plunging themselves into a procedure without even wondering if they have the basic knowledge to get there. The theatre opens up a whole new universe for language teaching by making it accessible to all, any category of age, from all classes, educated or less educated. In Phenomenon Based Learning (PhenoBL) and teaching, holistic real-world phenomena provide the starting point for learning. The phenomena are studied as complete entities, in their real context, and the information and skills related to them are studied by crossing the boundaries between subjects. Phenomena are holistic topics like human, European Union, media and technology, water or energy.The starting point differs from the traditional school culture divided into subjects, where the things studied are often split into relatively small, separate parts (decontextualisation). The Council is expected to adopt the report by the end of the year. The report also proposes to set the new priorities for 5 years, replacing previous 3 year cycles, to enable a longer-term impact. The six new priorities proposed by the Commission are: Relevant and high-quality skills and competences, focusing on results, for employability, innovation and active citizenship; Inclusive education, equality, non-discrimination and promotion of civic competences; Open and innovative education and training, including by fully embracing the digital era; Strong support for educators; Transparency and recognition of skills and qualifications to facilitate learning and labour mobility; and Sustainable investment, performance and efficiency of education and training systems.
