Kleos Space signe un nouveau contrat avec l’entreprise américaine Spaceflight pour le lancement d’un troisième groupe de quatre satellites, prévu pour décembre 2021.

L’entreprise luxembourgeoise Kleos Space s’était déjà liée à l’américaine Spaceflight Inc. pour le lancement de son second groupe de satellites, KSF1 Vigilance Polaire . Elle annonce la signature d’un nouveau contrat, avec le même fournisseur de partage de charges utiles, pour le lancement de son troisième groupe, KSF2 Mission de patrouille polaire, prévu pour décembre 2021, à bord d’une fusée Falcon 9 de SpaceX.

Luxembourg's Ministry of the Economy and the Luxembourg Space Agency (LSA) have announced the launch of the first high-performance microsatellite of its kind, produced and assembled in the Grand Duchy.

The ESAIL microsatellite for tracking ships worldwide, developed under the European Space Agency's (ESA) Partnership Projects programme, launched last night aboard an Arianespace Vega from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. ESAIL is the first satellite of its kind produced and assembled in Luxembourg by the company LuxSpace, involving a large number of European small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with the support of the LSA and other ESA member states.

ESAIL was one of 53 satellites on Arianespace's rideshare adapter for Small Satellites Mission Service and was deployed into a Sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of more than 500 km. The microsatellite will track ships worldwide by detecting messages that ships radio-broadcast with their automatic identification systems (AIS).

Der Start war in mancher Hinsicht etwas Besonderes. Und er war gelungen, schreibt die französische Tageszeitung Le Figaro. Sie bezeichnnet das luxemburgische Unternehmen SES als das größte Satelliten-Unternehmen der Welt.

Für die Falcon 9, die den Luxemburger Satelliten in den Orbit trägt, ist es bereits der elfte gelungene Start hintereinander. Die erste Stufe der Rakete hat bei ihrem Start am Montag jedoch nicht jene charakteristischen Beine angebracht, die es ihr erlauben, erfolgreich wieder zur Erde zurückzukehren und aufrecht zu landen. Das Geschoss wird nach getaner Arbeit zurück in Richtung Erde fallen – und in der Atmosphäre verglühen.

Im Rahmen der Entwicklung der Luftwaffe hat der Regierungsrat am Freitag den Erwerb von zwei Mehrzweckhubschraubern des Typs Airbus 145 M gebilligt. Das hat die Regierung mitgeteilt. Die Maschinen sollen in dualer Nutzung auch der Polizei zur Verfügung stehen.

Außerdem stimmten die Minister im Rat einem Gesetzentwurf zu, mit dem die Regierung ermächtigt wird, einen Satelliten und sein Bodensegment für die Erdbeobachtung zu erwerben, zu starten und zu betreiben.

Mit den Investitionen will die Regierung eigene “Verteidigungsbedürfnisse” befriedigen und Verpflichtungen innerhalb der NATO erfüllen.

“Durch den Erwerb und den Betrieb eines hochauflösenden Erdbeobachtungssatelliten, der seinen institutionellen Partnern eine sehr hohe Wertschöpfungstiefe bietet, ist Luxemburg somit in der Lage, sich konkret und signifikant an internationalen Initiativen und Operationen sowohl im Rahmen der NATO als auch der EU zu beteiligen”, heißt es in einer Mitteilung der Regierungzum Treffen des Regierungsrats.

Less than three years after its creation, GovSat -- a public-private joint venture between the government and satellite operator SES -- is ready to put Luxembourg on the space map.

The commercial venture is targeting governments and defence users looking for secure communication services when deploying military operations, responding to humanitarian crisis, peace-keeping or engaging in situational awareness missions.

GovSat is in the process of building its first military satellite GovSat-1, with the geostationary satellite designed to use X-band and military Ka-band frequencies on high-power and fully steerable mission beams to support multiple operations.

And the service behind GovSat will be entirely run from a secure location in Luxembourg, with up to 15 people to be employed before the year-end.

While the venture is an initiative entirely "made in Luxembourg", GovSat aims to be part of an international network, collaborating with European Defense Agencies and with members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).

The Ministry of the Economy and Sweden-based GomSpace Group AB signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for their cooperation to develop, through a company to be created in the Grand Duchy and 100% owned by GomSpace, several activities focused on operations of constellations of nanosatellites and supporting GomSpace customers in data processing and delivery.

Founded in 2007 and listed under the ticker GOMX on the Nasdaq First North Premier exchange in Stockholm, GomSpace is a globally leading designer, integrator and manufacturer of high-end nanosatellites. The company employs more than 150 people with a headquarter in Denmark and subsidiaries in Sweden, US and Singapore. GomSpace plans to create a Luxembourg based business unit for operations of satellite constellations as well as data processing and distribution offered as a service to an international customer base, including a support center dedicated to regulatory affairs and an R&D organization.

Within the framework of this MoU, the Ministry of the Economy will provide funding through the Luxembourg space program (LuxIMPULSE) and other types of R&D grants to the forthcoming subsidiary of GomSpace for research and development activities taking place in Luxembourg. By 2021, the company intends to employ up to 50 full time employees in the Grand Duchy.

Luxembourg Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy, Étienne Schneider, stated: "The implementation of GomSpace in Luxembourg will be widening the capabilities of the local expertise ecosystem, in particular in the nanosatellite segment. By choosing the Grand Duchy for their international expansion, GomSpace acknowledges the substantial efforts of the government over the last years to put in place the necessary measures to support the continued strengthening and diversification of its space sector, including but not limited to the SpaceResources.lu initiative."

SES a présenté son réseau satellitaire O3b mPOWER en partenariat avec Boeing

L’opérateur luxembourgeois de satellites SES a annoncé lundi le lancement d’O3b mPOWER, un nouveau système dédié aux communications en réseau à haute performance. En partenariat avec Boeing Satellite Systems, ce dispositif totalisera une couverture de près de 400 millions de km², soit les quatre cinquièmes de la Terre, renseigne un communiqué de presse du groupe.

Pour concrétiser ce projet, SES s’est allié avec Boeing Satellite Systems pour la construction de sept satellites d’orbite terrestre moyenne (MEO). SES exploite déjà un système doté de douze satellites de ce type mais ceux présentés lundi se distinguent par une superpuissance: la constellation disposera de 30.000 faisceaux configurables et orientables pour être basculés en temps réel afin de répondre aux évolutions de la demande. Dans son communiqué, SES qualifie O3b mPOWER de «système de bande passante le plus efficace jamais construit». Son lancement est prévu pour 2021.

«Nous mettons à profit la position de leader que nous occupons aujourd’hui en consolidant les capacités de notre constellation O3b existante en orbite terrestre moyenne», a commenté le président et CEO de l’opérateur basé à Betzdorf, Karim Michel Sabbagh. «SES ouvre une nouvelle ère en matière de connectivité et transforme en profondeur le rôle et les capacités des satellites».

The Luxembourg government and Kleos Space S.a.r.l signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday, setting out their cooperation for space technology development within the SpaceResources.lu initiative.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Economy, the developments and research to take place in Luxembourg are related to the project for in-space manufacturing of composite beams equipped with antennas.

The government will support the development of the in-space manufacturing technology by providing funding through the Luxembourg space programme LuxIMPULSE.      

"By widening the capabilities of the national space sector, the implementation of Kleos Space in the Grand-Duchy is confirming the constant expansion and consolidation of Luxembourg as a European hub for developing highly advanced space technologies in the context of the SpaceResources.lu initiative," said Economy Minister, Étienne Schneider, on Monday.

The newly created Kleos Space company is active in geolocation services and develops a space infrastructure for geo-intelligence and signal intelligence applications with in-space manufacturing. It is is 100 per cent owned by UK-based Magna Parva Limited.

À 3h01 cette nuit, Arianespace a réussi le lancement de ses deux gros satellites, dont SES-17, puis leur séparation. Le satellite luxembourgeois construit chez Thales Alenia est bardé de technologies innovantes attendues par le marché de la connectivité.

Avec un an de retard dû au Covid et un ultime report de 24 heures pour des vérifications au sol, Arianespace a réussi un triple record, la nuit dernière, à Kourou, en emmenant la plus lourde charge utile de son histoire (plus de 10 tonnes entre les deux satellites) dans une configuration inédite du lanceur (plus long de 150 mètres).

Moins de 39 minutes plus tard, le satellite luxembourgeois était séparé pour rallier son orbite de 67,1 degrés ouest, qui lui permettra de couvrir tout le continent américain du nord au sud, l’océan Atlantique et les Caraïbes pendant au moins 15 ans. Il entrera en activité à la mi-2022.

Kleos Space S.A., a Luxembourg-based space-powered Radio Frequency Reconnaissance (RF) data-as-a-service (DaaS) company, has signed a new contract with rideshare provider Spaceflight Inc. to launch its third satellite cluster (KSF2) in December 2021, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

The four KSF2 Polar Patrol Mission satellites will launch into a 500-600km Sun Synchronous orbit, complementing Kleos’ first and second satellite clusters and increasing cover over key maritime areas of interest (e.g. double the coverage over both Poles).

Kleos’ second satellite cluster, the Polar Vigilance Mission, recently completed a key development milestone and remains on track for a mid-2021 launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9.

Commissioning and data collection from Kleos’ initial Scouting Mission satellites, which launched from India into a 37-degree inclination in November 2020 is nearing completion.

Les députés ont donné cette semaine leur feu vert au lancement d’un satellite d’observation de la Terre qui répond aux engagements du pays à l’égard de l’Otan. L’investissement est aussi vu par le gouvernement comme un avantage commercial dans le cadre de la poursuite de la diversification économique.

GovSat sera doté à court terme d’un second satellite dans sa flotte naissante. En adoptant mardi à une large majorité (seuls les deux députés Déi Lénk ont voté contre) le projet de loi 7264, les députés ont mis un nouveau satellite d’observation de la Terre ainsi que ses équipements au sol sur une rampe de lancement. 

Contribuer aux efforts de l’Otan

«Ce satellite offre une capacité qui manquait à l’Otan et à la politique de défense européenne», déclare à Paperjam Étienne Schneider, ministre de l’Économie et de la Sécurité intérieure. 

En 2014, les pays membres de l’Otan s’étaient accordés sur l’objectif – à moyen terme – d’un effort budgétaire équivalent à 2% de leur PIB. Le Luxembourg avait donné un signal, pour rattraper son retard, en s’engageant à passer de 0,4% à 0,6% d’ici 2020.

«Il importe de spécifier d’emblée que le projet (…) est destiné à des fins d’observation de la Terre dans des zones d’opérations ou d’intérêt de défense, et non pas à de l’espionnage», précise le projet de loi.

Dans un communiqué, la société, possédée à 50% par l’État et 50% par SES, indique que l’engin a atteint sa position orbitale définitive, «ce qui lui permet de subvenir aux besoins de missions en Europe, au Moyen-Orient et en Afrique, et de fournir une vaste couverture maritime en Méditerranée et en mer Baltique, ainsi que sur l’Atlantique et l’Océan indien».

SES is leadîng a European consortium of industry partners to sign an agreement with the European Space Agency (ESA) to set up Pacis-1, a new satellite communication platform for governments that is aimed at making secure satellite communications accessible and available to governments and institutions.

Pacis-1 is part of the ESA’s Govsatcom Precursor programme and is the first step in demonstrating how the European space industry can support the EU’s Govsatcom initiative and leverage governmental and commercial satellite services to provide secure access to satellite communications for a wide range of governmental applications. The project will demonstrate in-field usage of the system for civil protection, border control, humanitarian missions, maritime surveillance, among other applications.

Under the agreement, SES will put in place the architecture and service concept of Pacis-1, leveraging the space assets and ground infrastructure of the stakeholders involved in the project.

L’annonce ce mercredi de l’arrivée au Luxembourg de la suédoise GomSpace – spécialisée dans les nanosatellites – démontre une nouvelle fois le rôle de leader qu’a endossé le Luxembourg dans l’industrie spatiale en Europe et au-delà. Le ministre de l’Économie, Étienne Schneider, s’en réjouit.

Après avoir déjà signé un accord avec le Portugal, nous allons en signer un autre à la mi-octobre avec les Émirats arabes unis et en novembre avec le Japon. Puis nous allons encore négocier des contrats identiques avec la Russie et avec la Chine.

Ces pays, et d’autres encore, ont un business de l’espace important et déjà très développé chez eux, mais pour tout ce qui est des activités commerciales dans l’espace, ils s’intéressent à nous et souhaitent participer à ce que nous faisons.

Et je trouve plutôt génial que nous nous trouvions aujourd’hui dans le driver’s seat, que nous décidions dans quelle direction les choses doivent aller et que les autres nous suivent. C’est une chose à laquelle je ne m’attendais pas au début, lorsque nous avons lancé cette initiative.

Der Satellit, den Omar Qaise bauen will, ist nicht groß, vielleicht gerade mal so lang wie ein halber Arm. Aber er kann vieles: Verbindungslöcher im Wifi-Netz stopfen, auf Öl-Plattformen und Schiffen für eine bessere Verbindung sorgen oder Tierbestände in Afrika überwachen.

Die Kunden sind interessiert und Qaise weiß, wie man sie anspricht. Schließlich stehen in seinem Lebenslauf die ersten Adressen der Raumfahrt: Das Deutsche Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, OHB System, die European Space Agency und zuletzt SES. Für sie hat Qaise Satellitenplatz im Mittleren und Nahen Osten verkauft.

Das ging gut, denn Qaise kennt sich dort bestens aus und spricht fließend Arabisch. Der Irak ist seine Heimat.

The satellites will be part of SES's "O3b mPOWER" satellite-based network – comprising satellites, ground infrastructure and software intelligence – which it said will launch in 2021.

"The SES O3b mPOWER system opens a new era of connectivity, fundamentally transforming the role and capabilities of satellites," said Karim Michel Sabbagh, President and CEO at SES.

À ce jour, quatre entreprises du secteur spatial se sont déjà installées au Luxembourg: les américaines Deep Space Industries et Planetary Resources, la japonaise ispace et la société germano-luxembourgeoise Blue Horizon. Ce lundi, un nouvel opérateur a choisi de développer ses activités au Grand-Duché. Il s'agit de la société britannique Kleos, spécialisée dans la construction et la géolocalisation de satellites.
