If journalists want to raise real awareness of what is going on in the world, they can´t just offer the audience facts and images. They also have to give possibilities to feel the reality. Nonny de la Peña´s Project Syria is a great example of it.

This project was created by artist Stan Douglas and the National Film Board of Canada's digital studio. And unlike 3D augmented reality gaming experiences — like the Oculus Rift, which was recently purchased by Facebook for $2 billion — it's a holodeck-like experience and your body is the joystick. I'm really intrigued by this thought process:
"This idea of research positioned as a Secondary rather than a Primary phase of exhibition development, may seem an anathema to traditional museum process but it is fundamental to an audience-centric rather than curator-centric result. By framing the storyworld at a high level first, the process of researching has parameters built from the intended experience of the audience, rather than the subjective or personal inclinations of curators or an pre-determined idea of ‘knowledge that should be imparted’. In my view, the term "experience economy" is morphing into the "immersive" economy - and you will see the rise of more "immersive technology" to facilitate. Emergence has become Immersive.

This a new age for enjoying performances. We invited the radio into our homes. We opened our door to televisions, to the internet and everything else that has come with it. But this is a reversal in the arts, where we the audience are being invited in. Theatre is no longer set in building- but like heart that defines the home, the audience will now define the performance.

This article is useful when designing your own theatrical pieces for assignments. It allows you to think if you want a passive or interactive audience, and where the boundaries lie for this style of theatre.

How can a director produce an effective interactive theatre performance? Why do many interactive performances fail to fulfill their purpose? |
Michael Epstein and Mike Knowlton: "Transmedia writer and director Lance Weiler predicts that a “more social, more connected, more personalized wave of media” is coming, in stride with the platforms and practices of the new generation. But, like any new media form, there will probably be a lot of borrowing from older forms and audiences will take a while to warm up."
