Distinguished Professor of English Adam J. Sorkin was shortlisted for the British Poetry Society’s Corneliu M. Popescu Prize for Poetry Translated from a European Language into English. His nomination stemmed from a translation of Mircea Ivanescu’s "Lines Poems Poetry," published by the University of Plymouth Press. This work, along with five others, was honored by selection as part of the group of finalists out of an initial pool of 73 submissions. Sorkin’s translation of a book of poems by Marin Sorescu, "The Bridge," won this prize in 2005.

“You have to find a cultural touchstone equivalent,” said Enders. “By analogy to linguistics, I’d call it a deep translation. Middle French is hard, so I try to respect every specific term, but you’re looking to transpose what is clearly an idiom in 15th century France to its modern [English] equivalent. It’s one popular culture to another; you have to respect all at once all the different registers. There were a couple moments where I was like, ‘I found it!’”

This famous quote by Victor Hugo, who was one of my favorite authors when I was a teenager, is for some reason usually translated into English as “One cannot resist an idea whose time has come”. Although this mistranslation is now a part of American English in the same way as quotes from Shakespeare became a part of the language, even English speakers who don’t know any French can see what has been removed from the original quote and what has been added to it. “One can resist the invasion of armies, but one cannot resist the invasion of ideas” would be a much better translation. This translation immediately brings to mind many events from recent history or from our turbulent and cloudy present, such as the invasion of Iraq or the Occupy movements.
