TIFF: How the editing suite can make a performance, or a whole movie | TIFF 2012 | Arts | National Post

Editing is also what turns an excruciatingly long movie into one that lasts just as long as it should.

Films can be shot in Toronto or Montreal or Mumbai. They can be set in Ireland, Indonesia or on Mars. But they are all made in the same small place: the editing suite. It’s where good performances and bad ones are created — for better or worse.

Winona Ryder stars opposite Michael Shannon in The Iceman, the real-life story of Mafia assassin/serial killer Richard Kuklinski, who hid his work/life from his wife and two daughters for many years, until the law finally caught up with him.

Ryder plays Deborah, the wife, and says she had a clear picture in her mind of a woman who has strong doubts about what her husband is up to, but lives in denial, unable to question him. She was surprised, however, by what she saw on the screen.

“I just saw it for the first time in Venice and I think it plays more that she doesn’t know,” she says. When I agree with that interpretation, she exhales sharply, a little annoyed. “I guess in the editing,” she says. “There were probably three key moments that you go, ‘Ho, maybe she does know,’ but … I don’t think they’re in the movie. I think one of them is and it’s in a montage.”

Original version films and language learning

I have often heard that Spain’s addiction to film dubbing is responsible for the lack of proficiency in foreign languages.

Is it possible to learn a language watching films? Are movie subtitles necessary?

How many language-learning methods are there? Truly countless. Cada maestrillo con su librillo, is an old Spanish saying that proves that each teacher, from time immemorial, has her own, best and proven teaching and learning method.

I have often heard that Spain’s addiction to film dubbing is responsible for the lack of proficiency in foreign languages, which also proves that excuses abound as much as teaching methods.

allAfrica.com: Uganda: Are Movies Killing Reading Culture?

AS children, many were always told to concentrate on reading their books.

Television was a no-go area. But this trend has changed as students and teachers are gradually embracing watching movies as the easiest way to understand some literature novels.

As modern technology continues to evolve, lengthy books have been condensed into movies, a development that has discouraged students and teachers from reading.

Since the advent of the Internet and invention of the DVD, television shows and movies, can now tell stories in an easy manner.

In Uganda both students and teachers have embraced these inventions, especially in the study of English literature.

Forinstance, a literature teacher borrows a King Lear film, which he or she watches and later uses it as a teaching aid for his or her students.

Florence Nakanwagi, a high school teacher in Kampala, has taught literature in English this way for years and her students have been performing well.

Junior Mponye, a student of New Styles Secondary School, says he prefers watching films to reading novels.

He argues that watching a movie is more interesting than reading a novel.

"Reading is boring and sometimes when my teacher is reading a novel, I do not follow well," Mponye says.

He also says it saves time to follow a story condensed in a movie, other than reading 500 pages of a novel.

Richard Wandyaka, a book seller in Aristoc Bookshop says, book-related films are easy to memorise.

One can easily remember what he watched compared to recalling what he read in a novel.

Khan Academy, Coursera Partner with Crowdsource Platform Amara

Khan Academy, Coursera Partner with Crowdsource Subtitling Platform Amara
Written by: Bianca Da Silva on Aug 29, 2012 at 11:30am EDT

In an effort to allow more students the opportunity to be able to access and understand the courses available through Coursera and the Khan Academy, these two organizations are now partnering with Amara, which is a crowd source subtitling platform which works with volunteers from all over the world who translate content from one language to another. While universities are offering their courses to platforms such as Coursera, these are often in English and this means that only a limited number of students can benefit from them; with the assistance of translators, however, there is no telling how many will be able to take advantage of these online offerings.
The Potential of Amara to Reach a Global Audience
Amara was established in 2010, and yet it now boasts having added 200,000 subtitles in around 100 different languages to various online videos. A prime example of the abilities of Amara is the fact that volunteers were able to translate the Kony2012 video into 30 different languages in only two days; a substantial achievement for just about any organization. With potential such as this, the platform will turn any course into one that is easy to understand by anyone, anywhere in the world.

BWW Reviews: Dazzling Production of THE LION KING at the Fox

Translating an animated feature to the musical stage is a daunting challenge. Really, any film, even with actors who are drawn onto cells, usually makes a rocky transition. That's what makes The Lion King so disarming and dazzling in its conception and execution. The techniques and ideas pioneered here in the Tony Award-winning show have since been used elsewhere, but they still manage to excite and enthrall and audience, and that's a credit to all the skilled technicians and actors who make these characters come to life. The current production playing the Fox is a magical ride that must be taken, and it's easily an “E” ticket (if you remember those days at the Disney fun parks).

When young Simba, the lion cub, is brought into this world it begins the circle of life. Of course, his destiny is to inherit his father's (Mufasa) mantle as King over all he surveys. But, there's a fly in the ointment, and that's Simba's Uncle Scar, a shiftless character with his eyes on the prize, no matter what the cost. Tragedy ensues. And, since this is a revenge tale of sorts, it won't be long before an older and wiser Simba is back looking to reclaim his birthright from the evil Scar.

The Hindu : FEATURES / CINEMA PLUS : ‘Dubbing films save the industry’

Whenever there is an audio function at Prasad Labs, we see a familiar face mingling confidently with the film fraternity. She is producer Shobha Rani, who buys films from neighbouring States and dubs them for Telugu audiences. Since her father Naidu belonged to the industry, she has always known what film making is all about. Shobha Rani says, “We produced Abbayi Premalo Paddadu in 2004 and from 2006 onwards started dubbing movies; so far we have produced 28 films.”

Though it is called a ‘dubbing film’, a lot of effort goes into making it look like an original one. Towards that end, Shobha Rani has innumerable discussions with the writers, lyricists, dubbing artistes. If need be, she even changes a part of the original story and never compromises. She says, “In Rowthiram (Tamil) the heroine dies meaninglessly, so in Rowdram (Telugu) we changed it to a positive climax. I keep track of all the south films — Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam and also English.”

Shobha observes that people in Tamil Nadu don’t watch Telugu films like the way Telugu people watch Tamil films. Also there the media is not cooperative; their advertisement rates are also too high; only big production houses, like those of Eega or Businessman , can afford to advertise there.
