Collective Duty! - Bilingualism in Cameroon...

 

"Bilingualism in Cameroon which is a Constitutional provision; implying that English and French are the two official languages with equal status, is an asset that should be jealously upheld looking at its merits. Being able to express one’s self in the two official languages presents a boulevard of opportunities in and out of the country, more than people can imagine.
It is an open secret that bilingualism is a praiseworthy strategy to hold political and social integration intact and a strong uniting force for Cameroonians especially with the multicultural nature of the country; greatly envied by countries within and without Africa.
To say the least, Cameroonians who have journeyed out of the country can testify how honoured they felt sailing through with little or no hitches just because they understood what was said in English or French; some of the widely used languages in most fora. Some of the compatriots even transformed themselves into interpreters and translators and were certainly hailed by their peers from other countries who do not have the opportunity to be bilingual.
What however remains disturbing is that irrespective of the tried and tested multifaceted advantages bilingualism offers, some citizens still behave as if promoting the culture in a fair and decent manner would be doing favour to someone.  Why is bilingualism still seen by some as a stone hung on their neck that can and should be removed where and when possible? Why would an asset, jealously sought for by some, be treated with near disdain by others?
Come to think of it, there are administrations in the country where having approved documents in the two official languages is still optional. Either the documents are first published in one official language before seeking to translate into the other language thereafter or not even translated at all. In some of the administrations, what is served the public as one of the languages in the translation is completely everything than the concerned language. This is disappointing; in fact, utterly misleading and shows how much little or no care is given the two official languages which constitutionally have the same status.
 
Curiously, almost all administrations have Translation Units which should normally ensure that any document coming out is in the two official languages and more so with contents that respect all the standards of English and French. How the various units work, who heads them and the rapport they have with the administrations leave one with the impression that ...

Emotions are the interpretations of your feelings. The feelings you have emerge from your motivational system. You generally feel pretty good when you are succeeding at something you are striving for and bad when you are not. Your motivational system is not connected that well to your brain regions, which help you tell stories about your world. Often, in order to make sense of what you are feeling, you use information about what is happening around you to help you translate those feelings into emotions and those emotions help to guide your actions by giving you feedback on how well you are currently achieving the goals the motivational system has become engaged into.

 

Many times, that interpretation is fairly easy. Let’s say you are crossing the street and suddenly you have to quickly move out of the path of an oncoming vehicle. It is clear to you the strong negative feeling you are having is fear from nearly getting struck by the vehicle. If someone you work with compliments you on something you have accomplished well, it is obvious to you the positive feeling you are experiencing is pride.

 

Often things are not that clear. You might have a bad interaction with a family member before getting to your job. As the day wears on, you may interpret your negative feelings as frustration with the project you are working on rather than lingering negative effects from the interaction you had that morning.

Many people try to power through their negative feelings rather than attempting to understand them more fully. This is a real lost opportunity. Emotions provide valuable information about the state of your motivational system. Ignoring those signals and information is like driving around lost but refusing to consult your GPS or even look through the windshield. You continue to move forward, but who knows where you will actually end up? On the other hand, paying too much attention to your feelings is also bad. That is like staring at your GPS without ever starting your car. You won’t get anywhere that way."

Fundamental tensions that may arise between delegates or country representatives can be exacerbated if interpreters are not trusted. In accepting the prize, Marinaj said, “Once again, this event and this award are evidence that true literature has the magic power to bring us together from one continent to another, from one country to another, from one culture to another, from one love for humanity to another. This honor has a deep meaning for me because it comes from Kazakhstan, a land where it seems like there is more oxygen released into the air by literary words than from all the leaves of the trees. And it’s a pleasure to have a cup of fresh air and a glass of cool poetry with you tonight, in tribute to our shared love for literature and to all the people in the world who can benefit from it.”

Romania: Paul Iorgovici memorial prize

Marinaj’s Romanian prize, named in honor of the Romanian writer Paul Iorgovici (1764-1808), was awarded by the County Council of Caraș-Severin, the most important administrative and political institution in Romania’s Banat Mountains region, through the Caraș-Severin County Library, the council’s top literary institution. The Caraș-Severin County Library also bears Iorgovici’s name.

The Romanian award, given to major figures in the field of culture, literature and art from Romania and abroad, paid tribute to Marinaj’s lifetime of literary activity.

The award was presented by library manager Prof. Clara Maria Constantin, who called it an “unexpected and great honor for all the residents of Caraș-Severin County to host a person of his caliber, to whom the planet is indebted for his work.”

Speaking at the event, Prof. Dr. Cornel Ungureanu, the president of the Timisoara branch of the Association of Libraries of Romania, emphasized the writer’s arrival as a “historical event” that “puts us on the European literary map.”

Marinaj called the Romanian award “one of the biggest surprises of my professional life and one of the greatest honors of my career.” The writer noted that Romania is a “country that has proven throughout its history that its soul has the most perfect natural nourishments to cultivate great literature and art, a land that Vasile Alecsandri, Mihai Eminescu, Constantin Lucaci and Ana Blandiana called home throughout their lives.”

“Perhaps at a higher level, though,” Marinaj said, “I am extremely grateful to receive this award from the County Council of Caraș-Severin and its famous County Library. And to receive an award signed by Prof. Clara Maria Constantin and that says ‘Diploma ‘Paul Iorgovici’ in Honorem Gjekë Marinaj, USA,’ is truly an unbelievable honor on its own. Above all, to have my name appear next to that of Paul Iorgovici — a great writer and visionary man who in 1799 published an early Romanian grammar in Buda — makes me wonder what will I have to do as a teacher, writer and poet to live up to this.”

Dr. Gjekë Marinaj is an Albanian- American poet, writer, world literature scholar and translator, and literary critic. He is the founder of Protonism Theory, a form of literary criticism that aims to promote peace and positive thinking. According to the English Wikipedia and many other American and international media outlets, Marinaj has received multiple nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature

Marinaj has published more than twenty-five books of poetry, journalism, criticism and translation. His works have been translated and published in more than a dozen languages. "The translating commission of the Portuguese Episcopal released the provisional text of Deuteronomy. The fifth book of the Old Testament is part of a relatively new translation. It contains a reflection on violence in the Scriptures.

Biblical violence is often a source of discomfort for modern readers. Some find it hard to reconcile the histories with texts about God's love. The reflection provides more context to these disputed texts.
