eur un complément d'enquête dans l'affaire qui l'oppose à Laurent Gbagbo.Il serait simple et ingénu de ne trouver aucune espèce de lien entre le fait pour la Cour pénale internationale (Cpi) de recruter, en ce moment, des interprètes de langues guéré, dioula, bété, moré, baoulé, et l'affaire « le procureur de la Cpi c. Laurent Gbagbo ».

La Cour a rouvert un recrutement qu'elle avait initié, des mois plus tôt et qui se refermait au 31 décembre 2012. Elle propose des postes d'interprètes de terrain indépendants dans cinq (5) langues bien pratiquées sur le territoire ivoirien : les langues bété, guéré, dioula, baoulé et moré. Les détails sur les offres d'emploi sont disponibles sur le site internet de la Cpi dans la rubrique « recrutement ».

Que la Cour décide d'engager des interprètes des langues susmentionnées, à quelques jours du verdict dans l'audience de confirmation des charges contre Laurent Gbagbo, n'a probablement rien d'un hasard. Cela laisse croire que l'on s'achemine vers un approfondissement des enquêtes par le Procureur. Dans le cadre de ses investigations, en effet, le bureau du Procureur a recours à des interprètes terrain qui effectuent « le cas échéant, des traductions élémentaires pendant les missions ».

Assistant Professor, Endangered First Nations/Aboriginal Language Docmentation, Conservation, and Revitalizatio

The First Nations Languages Program in the Faculty of Arts at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a tenure-stream faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of Endangered First Nations/Aboriginal Language Documentation, Conservation, and Revitalization.

Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. at the time of appointment (or to have progressed to the point where completion of the Ph.D. is imminent) in a discipline directly relevant to the documentation, conservation, and revitalization of endangered languages, cultures, and Indigenous knowledge systems. Applicants will demonstrate a record of or clear potential for excellent research, teaching, curriculum development, publication, and student supervision. Applicants will also have a strong commitment to mentoring Aboriginal students, and a history of success inethical engagement and respectful collaboration with Aboriginal communities, organizations, and/or institutions. Experience in curriculum development for and/or the teaching of endangered languages would be an asset, as would expertise in information, archival, and/or museum studies.

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active program of research, teaching, and service. In addition to teaching in the core curriculum of the First Nations Languages (FNLG) program, the position involves the opportunity to develop additional FNLG curriculum related to capacity-building in research skills, language fluency, and pedagogical applications for endangered language maintenance and/or revitalization; the mentoring and research supervision of students at all levels from a diversity of disciplines; coordination with other programs and initiatives at UBC related to Indigenous peoples, as well as liaison with other institutions, organizations, and community-based initiatives involved in endangered language documentation and conservation provincially, nationally, and internationally. Responsibilities entail close collaboration with the Language and Culture Department of theMusqueam Indian Band under the established terms of the UBC-FNLG ethical protocols, as well as the negotiation of new collaborative relationships with other BC Bands and/or BC Aboriginal organizations working towards language reclamation and sustainability.

is inviting applications for a three-year Early Stage Researcher pre-doctoral position in corpus-based approaches to machine translation. The positions are part of the new EU Framework 7 Marie Curie Network EXPERT, concerned with the exploitation of empirical approaches to machine translation, including statistical machine translation and example-based machine translation.

One of the two projects allocated to Saarland University is:

Use of terminologies and ontologies to improve corpus-based approaches to translation, which is concerned with NLP technologies for matching text translations and retrieval techniques used in machine translation.

Description

The work will focus on statistical and machine learning techniques to address the problems. It will also involve aspects of human translation studies, based on a strong interaction with some of the partners in EXPERT. The research will be conducted in the research environment of Saarland University, with opportunities for collaborative work with several of the leading universities and industrial partners in EXPERT, and with the expectation of a 6 month secondments to 2-3 partners in this project based on their topic of research.

Applicants should hold a good honours degree in a relevant field of study (e.g. computational linguistics, computer science) and have experience in natural language processing, machine translation or related area. They should also have a solid background in statistics and good programming skills (C/C++, Java, Python/Perl, etc.). A interpreter who learned to sign with a Durham-based charity is encouraging more people to think about signing as a career.

Bibi Lacey-Davidson has interpreted live performances of Beauty And The Beast and for international music acts at Glastonbury since she completed her training.

The 26-year-old, who started learning sign language as a teenager, is hoping that by sharing her experiences it will inspire others to realise the potential career opportunities that British Sign Language (BSL) can present.

Bibi was training to lead children's workshops at the age of 15 when she received her first taste of BSL from Signature, a national charity which teaches people how to sign and interpret.

Bibi, from Tower Bridge, in London, said: "Two deaf children joined our group so we decided some of us should learn BSL so we could easily communicate with them. BSL is such a visual language and I couldn't believe how much I enjoyed completing my Level 1 qualification so I decided to carry on my training."

She worked through qualifications with Signature, which was set up in 1982, and achieved Level 6 in both BSL and interpreting.

Bibi said: "I really enjoyed all of my courses. Naturally as I progressed the courses became much harder and more involved, but the support I received from my teachers and the people I met within the deaf community was fantastic, as well as peer support from other students and colleagues."

Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Head of Unit, the incumbent of the post:
Translates, subject to revision, a variety of texts from English into BCS and BCS into English, respecting deadlines and using appropriate terminology.

Translation and interpreting offer two distinct career paths with ample opportunities for linguists to put their skills to use in exciting areas. From video game localization to interpreting for astronauts in outer space, from translating Harry Potter books to accompanying heads of state on diplomatic missions overseas, translation and interpreting offer many career opportunities to inspire and encourage students to learn foreign languages while allowing them to pursue other interests as well.

A Fast-Growing, Recession-Resistant Industry
The market for outsourced translation and interpreting is worth more than US$33 billion globally in 2012, according to the latest estimates from Common Sense Advisory. The market is divided into numerous segments with written translation making up by far the largest component, followed by on-site interpreting, which refers to spoken language interpretation services that are provided in person.

Another important segment of the market is software localization, which involves not only translating text so that software can be used in other languages, but preparing the software for international use and acceptance in a given market. Other services exist too, such as telephone interpreting (in which interpreters render information verbally over the phone), multilingual subtitling, and transcreation (also known as cultural adaptation or multilingual copywriting).

Within the U.S., many industries have suffered job losses due to global economic uncertainty – but the opposite has occurred for jobs in translation and interpreting. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that from 2010 to 2020, the number of jobs for interpreters and translators will increase by 42%, compared with just 14% for all occupations, and only 13% for other jobs classified in the “media and communications” field.

Where the Jobs Are
The vast majority of translators and interpreters are freelancers, but there are many organizations that offer full-time positions too. Full-time positions for interpreters are available at hospitals, courts, and schools in nearly every major city in the U.S. Most cities also have translation or interpreting agencies serving the local market. These firms do not usually employ translators, but they hire individuals with language backgrounds for other jobs — such as project management, account management, and sales positions. Typically, they offer freelance assignments to translators and interpreters.
However, students need not limit their dreams of job prospects to within U.S. borders. The Canadian government’s Translation Bureau has more than 1,700 employees. Many international organizations, such as the United Nations, have an ongoing need for translators and interpreters. Some even visit universities in the U.S. to recruit students on campus. The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation employs 2,500 people who translate information into and out of 23 different languages, and the European Parliament has 350 full-time interpreters on staff. Even some manufacturing companies — including major European automobile companies — hire in-house translators for their research and development or technical documentation teams.

Background
Under the guidance and supervision of LEAP Project Manager, the Senior Translator and Interpreter ensures effective execution of translation services and processes in the LEAP Project and the Senior Translator and Interpreter promotes a translation services consistent with UNDP rules and regulations.
The Senior Translator and Interpreter supervises and manages clerical staff of the Translation Unit. The Senior Translator and Interpreter facilitates the work of LEAP with the HNEC at the highest level. The Senior Translator and Interpreter works in close collaboration with the operations programme and projects’ staff in the LEAP and with UNDP HQs staff for translation-related issues and information exchange.
Duties and Responsibilities
Management of translation unit and translation of documents and ensuring the following results:
Full compliance with UN/UNDP measures of translation and implementation of the effective internal quality control framework.
Management of the translation unit ( 8-10 translators ) and contributing to translation of LEAP project documents coming from the project manager or any project staff or HNEC commissioners ( laws, regulations, manuals , decisions, meeting minutes).
Proof reading to ensure the quality of the translation.
Working within the required deadline.
Be available to UNEST for comments and corrections.
Cooperating and coordinating with other translators in the team.
Interpretation (consecutive, simultaneous and whispering):
Interpreter for the special Representative of UN Secretary General, when needed.
Interpreter for the chief electoral advisor.
Interpreter for the deputy of chief electoral advisor.
Interpreter for the project manager or any UN team members, consecutively, simultaneously or whisperingly.
Managing the interpretation services when needed for some events like press conferences, workshops, seminars, etc.
Preparing the necessary documents that help facilitating interpretation.
Taking the necessary measures with other interpreters that ensure the quality of interpretation.
Coordination between UN team and HNEC commissioners and staff:
Arranging appointments and meetings at a high level between the project managers and HNEC commissioners.
Arranging appointments and meetings between the UN team and staff members of HNEC.
Preparation of the necessary documents before the meetings.
Perform administrative work for the project:
Managing the documentation process in the UN office at HNEC.
Preparation and printing documents of LEAP, when needed.
Recording and filing of all documents at the office of UN at HNEC.
Following up the correspondences between LEAP manager and HNEC.
Drafting forms and cover pages of activities as required by HNEC and LEAP manager.
Provide consultancy and advices when necessary, concerning the cultural sensitive issues, relating to wordings and translations and other relevant matters:
Creating and promoting mutual understanding between UN team and HNEC staff.
Trying to solve any misunderstanding that might arise due to the cultural differences.
Ensures facilitation of knowledge building and knowledge sharing in the LEAP project focusing on achievement of the following results:
Organization of trainings for the operations/ projects staff on Translation issues specially for those relating to local cultural issues.
Promoting communication with UN team through explaining some cultural backgrounds.
Synthesis of lessons learnt and best practices in translation and interpretation.
Sound contributions to knowledge networks and communities of practice.
Coordination and facilitating of procurement of translation services:
Managing the interpretation services when needed.
Negotiating with translation companies to get the best offers based on quality, during the workshops, seminars and press conferences. Establishing a database of Translation companies and freelancers to be available when needed.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
Within the Governing Bodies Department, the Office of Language Services provides high-quality,
timely and cost-effective translation services to WHO's governing bodies and technical programmes
in the six official languages, so as to make health policy and technical documentation from WHO as
accessible as possible.
Description of duties:
1. Translate into Chinese from English a wide variety of texts dealing with medicine, public
health and related subjects as well as administrative, financial and legal matters (resolutions and records of WHO's Governing Bodies, documents for WHO conferences and meetings, working papers, scientific articles, speeches, programme statements, web materials, reports, correspondence, etc.);
2. Contribute to the establishment of accurate terminology in Chinese and to promote the TRA terminology data base;
3. Perform other related duties, as required.
In order to undertake the above activities the incumbent is called upon to: a) apply linguistic and analytical skills to produce elegant, concise and accurate translations; b) undertake reference and terminology research work as required; c) consult with originator or competent units to clarify ambiguous points and solve problems relating to terminology or meaning; d) draw attention to any errors or inconsistencies in texts to ensure that they are corrected in the original and in other language versions as appropriate; e) advise on Chinese usage on request.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:

University degree in translation, languages, social sciences, literature, or in a subject field of interest
to WHO.

Assistant Professor- Intercultural Communication

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures is inviting applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, specializing in Intercultural Communication, commencing August 1, 2013 (subject to final budgetary approval). The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Anthropology or Linguistics, with an interest in the ethnography of communication, and have an excellent record in teaching and an outstanding research record, as well as a very well developed research program for the next 5 years. The successful candidate will be teaching mainly in English, but the ability to teach in one of the Department’s languages, especially Chinese (Mandarin), would be an asset.
We are looking for someone who will be able to teach undergraduate linguistics in the interdisciplinary Bachelor’s degree in Arts and Contemporary Studies (www.ryerson.ca/artsandcontemporarystudies) and to join the Yeates School of Graduate Studies in order to become involved in one of the Faculty of Arts’ graduate programs, such as the M.A. in Immigration and Settlement Studies and the M.A. and Ph.D. in Communication and Culture. The candidate will also have experience in providing service to the academic and/or professional community. Finally, in anticipation of the launch of the Department’s undergraduate degree in Language and Intercultural Communication, the candidate will have an ability to participate in the promotion and development of this new and exciting program.
