Photos for Class is an image search engine that only locates images that are labeled with a Creative Commons license. When students download images from Photos for Class the images include the attribution that they need to include when they re-use the image. This week Photos for Class published a couple of widgets that you can embed into your blog. In the video embedded below I demonstrate how to add the Photos for Class image search widget to your blog.

Photos for Class is a very good web tool that you and your students can use to search for and download Creative Common licensed images. The search engine of Photos for Class uses Flickr safe search to return results that are licensed for school use.

Photos for Class es un portal para estudiantes que les facilitará la vida a la hora de buscar por imágenes libres de derechos listas para usar en trabajos académicos. El servicio ayudará con las consultas al encargarse de activar filtros (propios, de licencia Creative Commons y de Safe Search) de forma automática y con ayuda de Flickr que es quien sirve como base de datos para las imágenes presentadas. Por cierto, no nos cansamos de preocuparnos por promover un buen uso de las imágenes de dominio público y del contenido de terceros aún siendo para fines educativos así que no sobra recomendar una leída al artículo sobre los peligros de usar fotos de cualquier fuente aún siendo conseguidas desde Google o Wikimedia, una ojeada a los generadores de citas bibliográficas que la web nos facilita, y finalmente, un repaso a 20 opciones para detectar plagio en escritos.

A question I get a lot from readers is where to go for free, classroom-safe images. Photo sites are either too sparse or poorly vetted. And–while we’re on the subject of online images–it needs to be easier to add citations because otherwise, students will just skip that step.
