In Europe and the United States, mass literacy—meaning more than 50 percent of the population knows how to read—has only been around for about 150 years. In other areas of the world, such as most of Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, it’s much more recent.

Excellent idea. Not just for kiddies either. But it does presuppose computers and IT resources, which aren't necessarily available in developing countries. That is the filter I apply as our Foundation funds girls' education in those communities.
