Learning About Young Makers | MakerED | MakerSpaces | eSkills | Challenges | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it
Conclusion

Even though these weeks were considered a maker education summer camp, there was an expectation from the school and parents that the learning activities incorporated the expectations and rigors of a classroom environment. I could easily identify cross-curricular state and common core standards even though I never taught to THE standards. Never during the sessions were the young learners formally testing, asked to be quiet or sit still, or asked to finish quickly so we can move on. Yet, I believe each of the kids would say that they learned lots . . . . and had fun doing so.

Young makers are more capable than what people (adults) typically believe.

Instead, the making learning activities were structured to honor natural ways of learning along with developmentally appropriate practices. Sadly, it appears that some of these natural ways of learning were “conditioned” out of the young learners through more formalized education as I identified in my observations.

Incorporating making into a learning environment teaches lifelong learning skills such of perseverance, love of learning, working with others, and embracing challenges.

How to Be a Better Listener

How to Be a Better Listener | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

Couples often come in and say, “We need help with our communication,” and the presumption is that they need to become better communicators–by which they mean better talkers. But the best thing you can do for your relationship is become a better listener.

Here are some tips for improving your listening with everyone in your life–your partner, friends, colleagues, kids. They’ll all benefit, and so will you.1)  Notice when you’re just waiting to talk.

This graphic is so unique and informative.

The "digital learner" section on the bottom right especially is a great visual summary of many of the other articles. It includes "adaptive learning", "eLibraries" and "digital textbooks", which are all topics that have been mentioned in other articles. Some points, like "3D Printing", add another layer of possibilities.

What strikes me most about this is how the different fields flow together. It is a convergence of media, education and the work world, which makes a lot of sense. Just like the internet, everything is connected.

It seems to be the top goal to become a literate "digital citizen" in the future...

Strategies for Strengthening the Brain’s Executive Functions

Strategies for Strengthening the Brain’s Executive Functions | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it
An appropriate metaphor that often helps students and educators alike understand the role of executive functioning in thinking and behavior is to imagine an orchestra conductor. The conductor chooses what work the orchestra will perform, decides how to interpret that work, sets the tempo for the performance, and directs each section of musicians to contribute at the appropriate time. In the same way, executive functioning allows us to:

Activate awareness
Self-regulate by cueing, directing, and coordinating the various cognitive skills necessary for moment-to-moment functioning
Establish goals and make long-term plans
Maintain a self-image of being in charge of our learning and actions.
Students can and should be taught to develop their executive functioning as a path to self-directed learning and self-determined living.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is aware we live in a connected world. Americans wear Fitbits, have Nest thermostats, use automated light systems from companies like Belkin and Philips, even have televisions that predict what they want to watch. But in a new report, the FTC has a warning: Existing privacy regulations don’t really cover the Internet of Things, and the Commission doesn’t really trust device manufacturers to do the right thing—or even be aware of the risks of collecting all that data.

In a staff report issued this week, the FTC warned that makers of connected health, home, and transportation devices could potentially leave their users vulnerable to data hacks. Most of all, the FTC is concerned that private information will be used to jack up users' insurance rates or deny them access to loans.

Heutagogy: designing for self-directed learners #education | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it
While acknowledging that the whole concept of self-determination – or ‘Google
learning’ as it has been called, pejoratively, in certain circles – is fraught with the potential for missing the point, being distracted into rabbit warrens or just getting bad information, we would like to emphasise that this is only a potential.

===> Any learning theory is only as good as the way in which it is applied and worked through, and we have seen it produce highly successful results where correctly applied, in the right circumstances. <===

Watch this space for chapter and verse, as we will soon be publishing case studies of several recent programmes that feature high levels of learner self-direction.

Learners are changing, learning is changing – and heutagogy can give important clues about rebalancing the burden of responsibilities and permissions in an always-on, networked, instructorless, post-course world.

Changing the Mindset of Education: Every Learner is Unique | eSkills | Growth Mindset | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it
Stanford researcher Carol Dweck, in studying motivation and perseverance, found that children can be separated into two categories: those with a fixed mindset believe that their successes are a result of their innate talent or smarts; and those with a growth mindset believe that their successes are a result of hard work.

Children with a growth mindset see intelligence as something that can be cultivated: the more learning they do, the smarter they become. Those with a fixed mindset see themselves as either smart or not smart and believe that their intelligence cannot grow; no matter how hard they work. When children with fixed mindsets fail, they feel trapped and start thinking that they must not be as talented or smart as their peers.

How Does the Brain Learn Best? Smart Studying Strategies

How Does the Brain Learn Best? Smart Studying Strategies | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it
We can be tactical in our schooling. The traditional advice on learning has been to “study hard,” in a quiet place and with the same routine, yet that doesn’t say much about what to specifically do. But pupils today can change the way they study to exploit the brain’s quirky learning processes, using the strategies revealed by memory and learning research. While that science is still maturing, “it’s at a place now where it can give you a specific tactical plan,” Carey said.

.

Students can tailor their preparation with techniques targeting different kinds of content or skills, and manage their schedule to optimize their time. “That’s a powerful thing, because we go through our whole lives never knowing that,” he said.

.

Ultimately, the value of these learning strategies isn’t just about earning better grades, Carey said. In the modern jungle of society, learning is still about surviving: For young people, it’s about sussing out what they’re good at, what rings their bell, and what they want to do with their lives. “It’s informing you of: Who am I? Where do I place my bets? Do I major in physics or do I major in architecture or design, or do I major in English? Do I belong here at all?” Carey said. Those are important decisions. “Being self-aware about what’s effective learning and how it happens, I think, gives you a real edge in making those choices.”

Elements of Learning Experience Design

Elements of Learning Experience Design | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

The process of designing any sort of human experience, regardless of purpose or platform, is centered around reaching a desired outcome, ideally with as little fuss and as much joy as possible.

The purpose of an experience and the platform on which the experience takes place will vary: purchasing a plane ticket on a tablet to vacation, enjoying a musical performance in a theater, or learning to code in a classroom. Although each of these experiences require their own unique methods and frameworks, the elements that should be taken into consideration during the design process remain mostly the same.

As a learning experience designer, you should focus your time and attention during the strategy plane on identifying the gaps that exist between the learner and his/her desired outcome. Those gaps exist due to a lack of the following:

Knowledge: Do learners lack the proper information to complete a task?Skill: Do they have all of the right information but lack the ability to translate that knowledge into action that could be applied to a given situation?Confidence: Are they able to demonstrate or apply the skill, but do they hesitate or refuse to apply it?Motivation: Are they able to demonstrate or apply the skill confidently but just don’t want to do it?Access: Do they have all of the above but lack the proper tools or resources to complete a task?

Once you are able to properly identify the gaps that cause learners to struggle, you must design a solution that effectively addresses those gaps.

Just like any experiences, learning experiences also need to well designed. After deciding on outcome to be achieved of learning particular course (learning outcome), gaps to reaching the outcome should be identified at requirement plane, strategy plane, interaction plane and sensory plane. In course of doing so, gaps in knowledge, skills, confidence, motivation and access that learners may have should be addressed through course delivery, that careful planning be made through the planning, determination of objectives, implementation and evaluation stage of curriculum.

A Promise Is a Promise

A Promise Is a Promise | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it
Promise to Tell the Whole Truth

A promise is a promise. Some folks apply a rating scale, believing that breaking a big promise is inexcusable, while a small one is acceptable. That’s simply false. While breaking a big promise, such as failing to repay borrowed money, can torpedo a relationship, reneging on promises, such as being on time, casts doubt on future behavior.

Remember, trust is built through a series of experiences shared with others. When behavior is consistent, faith in the relationship develops. When promises are broken or people are misled, the bonds of trust are breached.

Broken promises imply that the offenders either didn’t think before making the promises, or don’t care that they’ve let you down. They’re also implying that their needs are more important than yours. So, be careful about the promises that you make and with whom you make them.
