Rising Debt Engulfs Colleges as Well as Students ~ Chronicle of Higher Education

Rising Debt Engulfs Colleges as Well as Students ~ Chronicle of Higher Education | :: The 4th Era :: | Scoop.it

by Dan Troop

summary by Carnegie Perspectives

"President Obama took aim last week at rising levels of student borrowing, but two graduate students in sociology say the real culprit for growing college debt is Wall Street. In a report posted last week on the Web site of the Scholars Strategy Network, Charlie Eaton and Jacob Habinek, doctoral candidates at the University of California at Berkeley, assert that the expanding burden of tuition debt is “partly driven by the indebtedness universities have taken on.” Public research universities have passed along their own debt to students by raising tuition and fees by an average of 56 percent from 2002 to 2010, say the authors, who work in the branch of sociology known as financialization. The Road to Transformative Learning in higher education (3 part strategy)

The Road to Transformative Learning in higher education (3 part strategy) | :: The 4th Era :: | Scoop.it

from the website

"Higher education institutions are convinced that online learning isn’t just an attractive complement to traditional instruction — it’s often part of a core educational strategy that is fundamentally reshaping how they compete for students and achieve success. But even long-term veterans of online learning acknowledge that campuses must navigate a host of stumbling blocks, including underperforming support systems and digital content that doesn’t meet the needs of today’s students. What’s required is a three-part strategy that covers technology, curriculum and content planning, and professional development. This Center for Digital Education white paper explains how to begin this transformative process to bring a successful online learning environment to your campus."
