Twitter Literacy (I refuse to make up a Twittery name for it) ~ Howard Rheingold

Twitter Literacy (I refuse to make up a Twittery name for it) ~ Howard Rheingold | :: The 4th Era :: | Scoop.it

by Howard Rheingold

"Twitter is one of a growing breed of part-technological, part-social communication media that require some skills to use productively. Sure, Twitter is banal and trivial, full of self-promotion and outright spam. So is the Internet. The difference between seeing Twitter as a waste of time or as a powerful new community amplifier depends entirely on how you look at it – on knowing how to look at it.

"When I started requiring digital journalism students to learn how to use Twitter, I didn’t have the list of journalistic uses for Twitter that I have compiled by now. So I logged onto the service and broadcast a request. “I have a classroom full of graduate students in journalism who don’t know who to follow. Does anybody have a suggestion?” Within ten minutes, we had a list of journalists to follow, including one who was boarding Air Force One at that moment, joining the White House press corps accompanying the President to Africa."

10 Amazing #SocialMedia Statistics [INFOGRAPHIC]

10 Amazing #SocialMedia Statistics [INFOGRAPHIC] | :: The 4th Era :: | Scoop.it

Did you know that Twitter is grabbing more new registrations than Facebook, with more than half of its entire userbase compromised of people who have signed up in the last year, compared to just 19 percent for Mark Zuckerberg’s baby?

What if I said that almost a quarter (23 percent) of Facebook users check their account five or more times each day, Twitter users are 33 percent more likely to be Democrats or – sorry Foursquare – that 74 percent of Americans are unfamiliar with the concept of ‘checking in’.

These, and several other amazing social media statistics, can be found in the infographic on social media statistics...

Top Tech Trends and People of 2012

Here is the textbook that I created/curated for teaching my New Media Technology class during the Spring semester of 2012 at Hannam University's Linton Global College. I took great effort to give credit where it is due. I aimed to show my students how they could access enough free info on the web that was of equal or greater value than the wonderful information found in expensive textbooks. Feel free to share and please support the true authors of this book in any way you can (money, likes, blog comments, links, etc.) I am simply the currator of this content.

Check out the top five schools using social media well, at least today. These are the usual suspects.   ALSO take a look at OmniAcademy and Southern New Hampshire University (profiled in Fast Company.)   These two seem to have more in common in preparing for the disruption in higher education that is already beginning to happen.

The Twitter of Tomorrow ~ the New Yorker

The Twitter of Tomorrow ~ the New Yorker | :: The 4th Era :: | Scoop.it

by Matt Buchanan

"Twitter has evolved, particularly over the past couple of years, from a simple, text-based service toward something richer and fuller: users can now embed everything from pictures to Vines tofull-on mini-apps within their tweets. It’s like a stream gradually becoming a raging river. Twitter has transitioned from a technology company into a powerful media company in its own right.

"What’s coming next is a more graphically intense Twitter that is marked by fundamental transformation of its core experience on mobile phones. Within the company, the decision has been to prioritize mobile over any other medium, including the Web, and it will see the most change the most rapidly. Internally, the way the company thinks about apps has shifted: for a time, its philosophy was that its apps should feel as similar as possible across every platform. A couple of years ago, Twitter employees—including Jack Dorsey—frequently invoked“consistency.” In other words, Twitter wanted its iPhone app to look and work like its Android app. But now the company has come around to the idea that its apps should be custom designed for each and every platform, in order to take as much advantage as possible of what each one has to offer."

How Twitter is Reinventing Collaboration Among Educators

How Twitter is Reinventing Collaboration Among Educators | :: The 4th Era :: | Scoop.it

TWITTER TRANSFORMS EDUCATORS

Before the advent of Twitter, most educators I know had limited opportunities to collaborate with colleagues outside their building. Some subscribed to listservs or participated in online forums, but these outlets lacked critical mass; teachers also networked at in-person conferences and training sessions, but these isolated events didn't provide ongoing support.

Enter Twitter. I've heard many educators say that Twitter is the most effective way to collaborate and that they've learned more with Twitter than they have from years of formal professional development.

Here are some of the specific ways educators are using Twitter to collaborate:

Twitter provides a great opportunity to collaborate with educators outside of your local physical community. The exchange of ideas and perspectives can reenergize your career. “Twitter is often just the introduction — the virtual handshake that opens the door to a deeper collaboration”
