Twitter to stop counting photos and videos as part of 140 characters | #SocialMedia  | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it
Twitter may be finally making a long-awaited update by changing the way it counts the 140 characters in tweets.

From 19 September, the social network will start to cut down what it counts as part of the word limit, reports The Verge.

Attachments including pictures, GIFs and videos, as well as quoted tweets will no longer be counted as part of the 140 characters, enabling users to cram in more words.

Twitter : vous auriez bientôt droit à 140 caractères, vraiment | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it

Twitter stellt Abschied von 140-Zeichen-Regel in Aussicht | Social Media

Twitter stellt Abschied von 140-Zeichen-Regel in Aussicht | Social Media | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it

Twitter warns users they may have been hacked by 'state-sponsored actors' | Technology | Social Media | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it

Twitter has warned a number of users that they may have been the target of a state-sponsored attack.

The company has apparently sent the warnings by email to more than twenty users, all of which contain the same details.

The warning begins: “As a precaution, we are alerting you that your Twitter account is one of a small group of accounts that may have been targeted by state-sponsored actors. We believe that these actors (possibly associated with a government) may have been trying to obtain information such as email addresses, IP addresses, and/or phone numbers.”

It continues: “At this time, we have no evidence they obtained you account information, but we’re actively investigating this matter. We wish we had more we could share, but we don’t have any additional information at this time.”

Twitter to Stop Counting Photos and Links in 140-Character Limit | #SocialMedia

Twitter to Stop Counting Photos and Links in 140-Character Limit | #SocialMedia  | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it
Twitter Inc. is making a major shift in how it counts characters in Tweets, giving users more freedom to compose longer messages.

The social media company will soon stop counting photos and links as part of its 140-character limit for messages, according to a person familiar with the matter. The change could happen in the next two weeks, said the person who asked not to be named because the decision isn’t yet public. Links currently take up 23 characters, even after Twitter automatically shortens them. The company declined to comment.

It’s a step in a larger plan to give users more flexibility on the site. Chief Executive Officer Jack Dorsey said in January that the company was looking for new ways to display text on Twitter, and would experiment based on how people use the service. For example, some people tweet screenshots of longer text in articles, or send many tweets one after the other to tell a story.

Twitter’s 140-character limit was originally adopted because it was a way to send Tweets while fitting all the information within a mobile text message -- a common way for sending Tweets when the service debuted in 2006, before the proliferation of smartphones.

The company earlier this year considered raising the limit to as many as 10,000 characters. But the quick, concise nature of Tweets has helped set the site apart from the competition. Executives have spent the last few months emphasizing how Twitter is a destination for live events and discussion. Removing the character requirement for links and photos may encourage users to add more media to their posts.

Why Twitter Is Finally Taking a Stand Against Trolls | Social Media | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it

Twitter Now Tracking User IP Addresses - F-Secure Weblog | Privacy | Social Media

Twitter Now Tracking User IP Addresses - F-Secure Weblog | Privacy | Social Media | Social Media and its influence | Scoop.it

In order to determine that I was attempting to log in from an "unusual" location, Twitter must be keeping a history of my previous IP addresses to compare against. This type of security feature is not new, Facebook has been doing this sort of thing for years already. But I've not yet seen it from Twitter. (A few years ago, Twitter seemed to be actively against such an idea.) Unlike Facebook, I don't see anyplace from which I can download my own connection history. Previous IP addresses used are available to those who download a Facebook archive. But IP address information isn't in the Twitter archive that I downloaded today.

So then the questions I now have for Twitter is this: for how long have my connections been logged and tracked? And when will a copy of the data be available to me?
