To Make it In Edtech, You Have to Understand the Education Sector

To Make it In Edtech, You Have to Understand the Education Sector | :: The 4th Era :: | Scoop.it
Spread the loveThe education sector is a complex marketplace, with several subsections. You have the early childhood market, the K-12 market, the higher education market, the continuing education market, etc. If you want to be successful, you must figure out which market or markets your product fits into. If you choose the wrong market, you could be on the short road to financial ruin and bankruptcy. Even if you choose the correct market, you still must have intimate knowledge of how it works. Unless you come from a teaching background before starting your edtech company, you likely don’t have intimate …

What if we could all send our children to a school in the cloud as Sugata Mitra suggests in a new TED Talk? Would you go? What would it look like?

I really like his "SOLE" concept. My students do as well. I use his "Whole in the Wall" concept to challenge my students to not wait for teachers when they want to learn something new.

Teaching the Net Generation: Teachers' perspectives in young Canadians in a wired world

Teaching the Net Generation: Teachers' perspectives in young Canadians in a wired world | :: The 4th Era :: | Scoop.it

From the website

Teachers had no trouble identifying several significant ways in which digital media are already enriching students' school experience. As well as providing access to a wealth of knowledge and learning resources (provided students were able to tell good information from bad), teachers told us that digital media gives students new opportunities to have an impact outside of the classroom, by publishing their work and communicating with people around the world, and to collaborate with their peers both during and outside of school hours. Finally, teachers also spoke of the value of digital media in allowing them to appeal to students' different learning styles – giving math instruction in a visual or kinesthetic form, for example, through a “virtual protractor.” This also held true for students with special needs, such as the student with autism who used a dictation program on his iPad to overcome his difficulties with writing.

Stephen's Web ~ The Bittersweet Convergence of Policy, Higher Ed and Tech

Stephen's Web ~ The Bittersweet Convergence of Policy, Higher Ed and Tech | :: The 4th Era :: | Scoop.it
This article summarizes a panel at a recent BBWorld conference. The premise is that "even as technology continually promises to deliver a more effective education to a more engaged audience of learners, it hardly ever measures up." Instead, we see "a rush of bad actors coming in and providing subpar, poor-quality, crappy education, used by schools that are seeing this as a cheaper way to get folks through." But the "what I really want" response is equally bad - "What I really want — on our overhead projector, I want a rollof plastic, not individual screens." Yes, someone said that. In 2017. Of course, this is a policy panel, so we get the usual discussion about whether or not regulations stifle innovation. As though that were the problem. (I wonder how much money authors get paid to write panel summaries. Maybe I could get a gig doing that.)

Tanya Townsend's curator insight, November 23, 2015 11:42 AM

This story map is a great visual of the current refugee crisis. This would be a helpful aid in describing the geographical barriers refugees face and how it affects them. For example the map shows where highest concentrations of deaths occur, naturally it is in the ocean. The ocean is a barrier for fleeing refugees. Think about how different landscapes and land forms can affect refugees available paths to flee

College Completion: Programs That Are Working, Tech That is Helping ~ edcetera

College Completion: Programs That Are Working, Tech That is Helping ~ edcetera | :: The 4th Era :: | Scoop.it

by Courtney Bell

"College completion is one of the primary measures schools use to assess the effectiveness of their institutions. According to the NCHEMS Information Center, in 2009 the average six-year graduation rate of bachelor’s degree students in the United States was 55.5%, so we definitely have room for improvement.

"There are a number of factors that can impact college success and completion, from social integration to getting hung up in developmental classes. Here we explore some of the programs that have been put in place to encourage students to succeed in school and achieve their degrees."

A Pedagogical Framework For Digital Tools

A Pedagogical Framework For Digital Tools | :: The 4th Era :: | Scoop.it
We've needed a strong pedagogical framework for digital tools since the introduction of technology into education. Hopefully this helps.

Louise Robinson-Lay's comment, December 23, 2012 8:26 PM
Thank you, we all need to move between frameworks.
Dolly Bhasin 's curator insight, December 27, 2012 3:10 AM

The framework is based on a distinction between a monological, a dialogical, and a polyphonic form of teaching. The three forms of teaching can be distinguished by their different perceptions of how learning takes place, and by their different perceptions of the relations between subject matter, teacher and student. By considering which form of teaching one wants to practice, one may, on the basis of the pedagogical framework, assess whether it would be appropriate to use a specific tool in teaching.
