Sustainable aviation fuel: A journey to greener skies

Sustainable aviation fuel: A journey to greener skies | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
About 15 years ago, Finnish energy company Neste decided to change its course. Since 1948, Neste was in the oil business, but the health of the planet and future generations began to weigh on the company’s leadership.

With much of the world still viewing climate change as an inconvenient truth, Neste’s executive committee and board of directors decided to embark on an ambitious transformation from fossil fuels to renewables. Now, Neste is a global leader in renewable fuels and the third most sustainable company in the world, according to Corporate Knights.

EU to target 30 million electric vehicles by 2030

EU to target 30 million electric vehicles by 2030 | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
The European Commission, in a strategy due next week, will lay out measures to tackle EU greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector. Reports speak of 30 million electric vehicles by 2030 and related infrastructure.

According to a draft document seen by Reuters, “The EU’s goal of climate neutrality by 2050 cannot be reached without introducing very ambitious measures to reduce transport’s reliance on fossil fuels.” The news agency further quotes the EU Commission estimating that the targets would require “at least 30 million zero-emission vehicles by 2030”.

For electric vehicles to make the change on the world that they are capable of, there must be a collective mindset to transition people to them. Having the European Union on board to make EVs a priority is a major benefit. They account for a large portion of the world population and the United States and China are also big into EVs so those 3 combined will be imperative for the global change in transportation.

Newsom orders California regulators to end sales of new gas powered passenger cars and trucks by 2035

California will outlaw sales of new gasoline-powered passenger cars and trucks by 2035, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday, a move he says will cut greenhouse gas emissions by 35% in the nation’s most populous state.

His plan would not ban people from owning gas-powered cars or selling them on the used car market. But it would end the sales of all new gasoline-powered passenger cars and trucks in the state of nearly 40 million people.

“Pull away from the gas pumps,” Newsom said in announcing his executive order to state regulators to draw up guidelines. “Let us no longer be victims of geopolitical dictators that manipulate global supply chains and global markets.”

At Jerry Brown's climate summit, one deadline will overshadow all the others

If the world is to keep global warming to levels society can tolerate, the deadline for ridding the roads of gas powered cars and trucks is approaching unnervingly fast. But even clean technology capital California has no clear path for getting there. Will Jerry Brown's climate summit help?
PIRatE Lab's insight:
As with so many things, this may take a crisis (created by policy or external circumstance) to get us on the path to a decarbonized transportation system.  Even so, the long-haul vehicles (tankers, jets, etc.) seem to remain as the biggest hurdle.

Why Does Green California Pump the Dirtiest Oil in the U.S.? | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
California may be a leader in climate policies, but much of its abundant oil reserves are nearly as carbon-intensive to extract and refine as Alberta tar sands crude. Many experts now say that reform of the state’s methods of producing oil is long overdue.

Are Sustainable Fuels A Viable Option For Aviation?

Are Sustainable Fuels A Viable Option For Aviation? | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
Ask the Editors: Sustainable aviation fuels are technically viable today; it is their economic viability that remains in question.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
This is a classic example of the common, partial assessment of sustainable practices. In these approaches, the onus is always on the solution/sustainable option to solve the entirety of the problem.

It is true that currently renewable aviation fuels cost more than the federally-subsidized fossil fuel production system. But this assumes that the damage caused by existing emissions from fossil fuels are "free" and do not factor into the cost of the traditional fuels.

We need to internalized the externalities people.

Wyoming governor's pitch: Fight climate change with coal

Like a near-consensus of the world’s scientific community, Gov. Mark Gordon believes in climate change. Like many across the planet, Gordon believes the problem is a man-made one, and that something needs to be done about it.

But – as he’s maintained on the campaign trail and into his second year in office – it doesn’t need to come at the cost of fossil fuels.

It was a tumultuous first year for Gordon, whose plans to move the state’s coal industry toward the experimental world of carbon capture technology came amid a number of coal bankruptcies in the Powder River Basin. Under heavy pressure from the Legislature, Gordon vetoed a bill allowing the body to sue the state of Washington, delaying the announcement of his own, original lawsuit until this week.

Renewable Diesel Maker Neste Lines Up Four Calif. Distributors

Renewable Diesel Maker Neste Lines Up Four Calif. Distributors  | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
“Neste brings great value to our company by offering a consistent supply of quality renewable diesel with a definite branding potential, along with an exclusive supply arrangement for our designated marketing area,” comments Ron Van De Pol, president of Van De Pol Petroleum.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
The shine of biodiesel and its brethren has turned dull over the past few years, limited by the availability and reliability of supply.  Most of the consistent stream has been snapped up by larger entities with larger fleets.  More supply should trickle down to the consumer market and help further wean us off of petroleum-based fuels.
