Apple has patched 17 security vulnerabilities in an update for the Windows version of its Quicktime media player.


The QuickTime 7.7.2 update fixes flaws in versions for Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP SP2 or later, one of which is a major bug that could allow an attacker to remotely execute code on a target system.
Other vulnerable Quicktime components addressed are tools that handle movie files, MP4 content and web pages.

OPEN SOURCE Linux distributors are quickly patching a security flaw recently found in the Linux kernel.


A local attacker can gain root access to the system via a privilege escalation vulnerability. The security hole involves the kernel failing to restrict access to the "/proc//mem" file, according to Techworld, and the security advisory is CVE-2012-0056.

CYBER CRIMINALS are mass producing their attack techniques and targeting smaller businesses, telecom Verizon has warned.


Talking at Verizon's Security Operations Centre in Dortmund, Germany today, security research director Wade Baker told The INQUIRER that small to medium businesses are "easy targets" for organised cyber crime compared to larger enterprises.

A NEW BREED OF HACKTIVIST has arrived calling itself Malicious Security or Malsec.


The group has bubbled along on Twitter for a while but made its first release today with a leak out of the Philippines. It says it has watched Anonymous over the last year and is ready to join its campaigns, though with a different flavour.

SECURITY VENDOR Sophos has warned Twitter users that they could be launching distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks by clicking on links.
The firm is warning users that a simple click on a link could be triggering a DDoS attack.

 

It is specifically talking about hacktivist group Anonymous posting links to pastehtml.com.
