Argentina. RR Donnelley: workers occupied the factory to put it into production against the illegal closure of the multinational company’s factory | real utopias | Scoop.it

(Garín district, Buenos Aires, 12/8/14). Trade union delegate Jorge Medina said: “after closing its plant in the Garín district of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, in a totally illegal fashion, leaving more than 400 families on the street, and that the Ministry of Labour confirmed that the company is breaching the ruling of the court that ordered both sides to have (compulsory) arbitration to resolve the labour dispute, the shop stewards’ committee and workers at R.R. Donnelley have resolved in an assembly to occupy the factory and begin production, in order to defend the 400 jobs. The workers denounce this closure as illegal and we are not going to be intimidated. We demand the immediate re-opening of the plant under the same working conditions, number of workers and salaries. If the company alleges that it is in bankruptcy we will begin production.

Seattle General Strike: Historical Legacies of the IWW and Workers Control - YouTube

2009 marks the 90th anniversary of the Seattle General Strike. This is the second part in a series on that event. This week, Indymedia presents a speech by Howard Kimeldorf, Professor of Sociology, University of Michigan, given at the anniversary celebration held in the Seattle Labor Temple. He describes, to an enthusiastic crowd, a bit of radical Seattle's history, along with the circumstances of the Seattle General Strike, and the syndicalism it exhibited. Recorded live on 2/7/9, his presentation is "Historical Legacies of the IWW and Workers Control." Those interested in labor will be fascinated to hear the details and see the photos of the first general strike in the US. Activists will marvel at some radical history they probably haven't heard before.

Should the public service have the right to strike? YES | real utopias | Scoop.it

It might seem like ancient history, but it wasn’t long ago that Canadian governments knew how to balance their books — and then some. The collective operating surplus of Canadian governments in 2007 equalled almost $40 billion. Teachers, nurses, and other public servants did their jobs. Tax revenues were more than sufficient to pay for their valuable work (in fact, average tax rates were falling, not rising).
