SIZE may count, but it is intimate access that matters. Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and global expansion are almost unanimously approved nowadays, unless you’re the Heineken family, who’ve opposed that view for five generations. And don’t hold your breath that they’ll change any time soon — if they ever do decide to sell, let the buyer beware.

That the many attempts to theorize the crisis of 2008, the deepest crisis since the Depression, have at best been inconclusive should not be all that surprising. After all, as Michael Bernstein noted in the late 1980s, a half-century after the Great Depression there was not yet any general agreement on the causes of that economic collapse. Another quarter century later, such a consensus over that long passed crisis has still not emerged. Yet if we on the left want to assess the likely outcome of the recent crash and develop a meaningful response, we need to at least clarify some of the issues involved.

The worldwide movement toward sustainability has numerous actors, many seemingly at odds, yet with at least some similar aims. Last week’s blog covered community- and incentives-based programs discussed at the Fuller Science for Nature Symposium on communities and conservation around the globe that was held in Washington, DC on November 13th. This week, I examine global activists and big corporations, players that act with a global scope in mind. While activists occupy a lofty realm guided by a pure morality, corporations are pragmatic and self-interested. Yet the contributions of both are needed for the planet to have any hope of developing toward a sustainable future. While heterogeneous, many of the symposium’s presentations discussed the need for local activism, global thinking, and the precarious balance between the two. If anything, the overall symposium leaned in favor of the local, of multiple individual actors doing the right thing and learning from each other, without the need for strong global governance mechanisms. The effect is that of an orchestra of skilled musicians, improvising, responding, and learning from each other, yet without any sort of conductor arranging the various parts, from governments to NGOs to activists to corporations.

There is growing agreement that the increasing volume of violent weather events like Hurricane Sandy in the U.S. and Typhon Haiya in the Philippines that have cost billions in property damage and thousands of lives, result directly from the discharge of more and more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. To address the menace of global climate change requires that we change the rules of the economy and put a price on discharging carbon into the atmosphere. But that would cause economic dislocation, cost ordinary people money and threaten many scarce jobs in the short term -- even as it will open massive economic opportunities in the long term.
