UN International Day of Democracy: Engaging young people on democracy - Jerusalem Post | real utopias | Scoop.it

The 2014 United Nations International Day of Democracy brings to the fore a great question – that begs an answer – facing the youth of the world and especially in countries in the Middle East and North Africa: How can widespread and apparently uncompromising socio-economic despondency be addressed in a sustainable manner? The answer lies in applied action – through participatory democracy that engages individuals and communities in dialog and consensus-building, with the goal of identifying their development challenges and opportunities and creating a plan for shared action to achieve priority projects.

WASHINGTON — Watching the gruesome execution videos, I felt some of the same emotions I did after 9/11. Barbarism is designed to provoke anger and it succeeded. But in September 2001, it also made me ask a question: “Why do they hate us?”

Arabs at the Crossroads: Political Identity and Nationalism - Sudan Vision

Arabs at the Crossroads: Political Identity and Nationalism - Sudan Vision | real utopias | Scoop.it

In the book; Arabs at the Crossroads: Political Identity and Nationalism, Hilal Khashan, an associate professor of political science at the American University of Beirut, provides a vivid description of Arab political performance since the decline of the Ottoman Empire in the nineteenth century and the subsequent formal abrogation of the Islamic Caliphate in 1924 amidst rising European colonialism and Zionism. The book is small (149 pages of text) but concise and well written. Despite raising some very controversial issues, Khashan has combined the coolness of scholarship with intellectual rigor and political concern. His dispassionate perspective is refreshing and makes the book unapologetically independent and provocative.

Popular Neighborhoods and the Arab Spring: Elements for a Renewed Approach - Jadaliyya

Popular Neighborhoods and the Arab Spring: Elements for a Renewed Approach - Jadaliyya | real utopias | Scoop.it

Housing in most of the Arab world cities is an informal affair. After having founded a family, or to remain near employment opportunities, most people trying to find a place to live inend up building their houses themselves, or participating in construction projects managed either by families or by modest real-estate developers. Due to the government’s inability to provide or support affordable housing on a large scale, people have to cope on their own to access shelter and neighbourhoods. Despite the importance of the issue, very few studies have been conducted in the domain, and it remains relatively unnoticed. In fact, after the 2000s, the interest in the subject has even begun to dwindle. Urban studies were more focusing on megaprojects, which renew and extend the urban landscape in a much more spectacular manner, such as the making of new towns, luxury housing, malls, historical downtowns, new business districts, and coastal resorts...

From the Arab Spring to Occupy, Corruption 2.0 Rallies the Masses - Forbes

From the Arab Spring to Occupy, Corruption 2.0 Rallies the Masses - Forbes | real utopias | Scoop.it

NEW YORK – From Turkey to Egypt, Bulgaria to Thailand, and Brazil to India, the rise of an urban, entitled, angry middle class is one of the most striking trends of the last few years.  Rebellions have different proximate causes, but protestors are united by a profound sense of disillusionment with self-interested and inefficient regimes. They are also technologically savvy, aware of their rights, and economically ambitious.  Their countries have benefited to varying degrees from emerging market growth and investment, but their regimes have all failed to evolve politically to meet the expectations of their people. As liquidity tightens and growth slows, this state-level dysfunction is increasingly exposed.  It is no surprise then, that a common theme drives all these protests – corruption.

Three reasons why Tunisian democracy can succeed

Three reasons why Tunisian democracy can succeed | real utopias | Scoop.it

After relatively short post-revolutionary transition period, Tunisian democracy is slowly standing up on its own feet. The 30 years of statesmanship from Habib Bourguiba, which brought Tunisia independence from French colonial rule in 1956, has left the legacy of authoritarianism deeply rooted in Tunisian society. His successor, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who served as Prime Minister in Bourguiba’s government, brought another 24 years of political and social repression with little hope for change… But after many generations of political opportunism and self-interest, Tunisian people, tired of struggling with high unemployment, inflation, corruption and lack of political and social rights, decided to take things in their own hands during the Jasmine Revolution of 2011.

The Arab revolutions: between tyranny and cultural heritage - Middle East Monitor | real utopias | Scoop.it

Did we, the Arabs, truly change after we revolted against our tyrants? Did we truly revolt so we could change? Are we capable of changing simply by overthrowing those who governed us? Or are we an exact replica of them and will we mimic them time and time again instead of creating a new culture? How long do we need to break out of the ancient culture of tyranny that was implanted in our minds and hearts by our fallen and falling tyrants?

The traditional Arab left-wing parties were as surprised as the Arab dictatorial regimes by the popular uprisings that started in late 2010 and swept over the region. Ironically, most left-wing parties were caught unprepared for what has become an important revolutionary movement in the modern history of the world.
