"While three African countries had been invited to the Bretton Woods conference, only one (SA) is represented in the G-20. At a recent meeting in Brussels, one of the new commissioners asked me rhetorically how Africa (54 states) can accept this unfair treatment, especially if one considers that Europe (28 states) is represented not only by four national governments but also by the European Union institutions, and most North and South American nations also sit at the table, along with leading countries in Asia and the Pacific. But the reality is very different from the fictional exercise we see performed at every G-20. Far from being marginal, Africa should be seen as key to building a new economic paradigm for the 21st century. The resources that make the global economy work are found mostly on our continent. From iPads to life-saving medical machinery and satellites, no major hi-tech product would exist without the minerals and metals we possess in this part of the world. We have the land in Africa that will feed the future and the sun that will power the next industrial revolution. If we reject a model of production that is impoverishing our people and destroying our environment, the entire world — which depends on us — will need to change too."

Sometime in the mid-1960s when the People’s Republic of China (PRC) was accused of fermenting revolutions in Africa, Chairman Mao Tse Tung, then Chairman of the Communist Party and head of the Chinese government, vehemently denied the charge. For more than a century, the “yan dandu,” (shorthand for “men who act like women” or cross-dressers) population was an accepted Hausa subculture in the Muslim north. Mark Twain wrote a satire about Leopold called “King Leopold’s Soliloquy; A Defense of His Congo Rule”, where he mocked the King’s defense of his reign of terror, largely through Leopold’s own words. It’s an easy read at 49 pages and Mark Twain is a popular author in American public schools. But like most political authors, we will often read some of their least political writings or read them without learning why the author wrote them in the first place. Orwell’s Animal Farm, for example, serves to reinforce American anti-socialist propaganda about how egalitarian societies are doomed to turn into their dystopian opposites. But Orwell was an anti-capitalist revolutionary of a different kind—a supporter of working class democracy from below—and that is never pointed out. We can read about Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer, but “King Leopold’s Soliloquy” isn’t on the reading list. This isn’t by accident. Reading lists are created by boards of education in order to prepare students to follow orders and endure boredom. From the point of view of the Department of Education, Africans have no history.
