The potential for fair African development - China Post | real utopias | Scoop.it
Across Africa, where many nations show high economic growth rates but with little benefit to their populations, the notion of social and economic “emergence” is taking hold as a remedy for perennial pessimism.

Benefits and Costs of Homophobia - AllAfrica.com

Benefits and Costs of Homophobia - AllAfrica.com | real utopias | Scoop.it

Homophobia is allowing politicians to manipulate public opinion for their own gains and fuels the division of a critical mass that demands the benefits of African labour and resources for the African people. Further it divides a critical mass into struggles over identities rather than over multiple layers of injustice and oppression that are inherently connected.

World needs a new Bretton Woods with Africa in the lead

World needs a new Bretton Woods with Africa in the lead | real utopias | Scoop.it

"While three African countries had been invited to the Bretton Woods conference, only one (SA) is represented in the G-20.

At a recent meeting in Brussels, one of the new commissioners asked me rhetorically how Africa (54 states) can accept this unfair treatment, especially if one considers that Europe (28 states) is represented not only by four national governments but also by the European Union institutions, and most North and South American nations also sit at the table, along with leading countries in Asia and the Pacific.

But the reality is very different from the fictional exercise we see performed at every G-20. Far from being marginal, Africa should be seen as key to building a new economic paradigm for the 21st century.

The resources that make the global economy work are found mostly on our continent. From iPads to life-saving medical machinery and satellites, no major hi-tech product would exist without the minerals and metals we possess in this part of the world.

We have the land in Africa that will feed the future and the sun that will power the next industrial revolution.

If we reject a model of production that is impoverishing our people and destroying our environment, the entire world — which depends on us — will need to change too."

Beyond Africa Rising - Future of Global Economy's 'Last Frontier' - The Guardian | real utopias | Scoop.it

In the past decade Africa has emerged in the world's consciousness in the context of an evolution in the continent's image. Africa is not yet seen as the place to be, to go to, or to be envied in terms of economic and societal progress. Indeed, still too many people around the world hold a decidedly different view.

The citizens will inevitably push for change if their aspirations are not met - The Standard Digital News | real utopias | Scoop.it

Sometime in the mid-1960s when the People’s Republic of China (PRC) was accused of fermenting revolutions in Africa, Chairman Mao Tse Tung, then Chairman of the Communist Party and head of the Chinese government, vehemently denied the charge. On the contrary, he argued it was neither the responsibility nor the intention of the PRC to do any such thing in developing countries faced with the ravages of colonialism and domineering tendencies of imperialism.

As a Muslim Bori practice the yan dandu’s religious ritual is traditionally practiced and celebrated among its most marginalized populations, like sex workers, and gay, bisexual and transgender men.

When You Kill Ten Million Africans You Aren't Called 'Hitler' | The ... | real utopias | Scoop.it

Mark Twain wrote a satire about Leopold called “King Leopold’s Soliloquy; A Defense of His Congo Rule”, where he mocked the King’s defense of his reign of terror, largely through Leopold’s own words. It’s an easy read at 49 pages and Mark Twain is a popular author in American public schools. But like most political authors, we will often read some of their least political writings or read them without learning why the author wrote them in the first place. Orwell’s Animal Farm, for example, serves to reinforce American anti-socialist propaganda about how egalitarian societies are doomed to turn into their dystopian opposites. But Orwell was an anti-capitalist revolutionary of a different kind—a supporter of working class democracy from below—and that is never pointed out. We can read about Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer, but “King Leopold’s Soliloquy” isn’t on the reading list. This isn’t by accident. Reading lists are created by boards of education in order to prepare students to follow orders and endure boredom. From the point of view of the Department of Education, Africans have no history.
