This past election has affected many people in many different ways. It has made a lot of people feel down and has created a lot of negative thoughts. That being said, I find positive psychology to be even more relevant.
According to Professor Barbara Fredrickson, President of the International Positive Psychology Association, people need to start learning the ways of positive psychology to stay focused, kind, productive and positive even though many are living in fear. You do not need to get rid of negative emotions, just handle them better. In this article, Michelle McQuaid mentions positive psychology techniques to help you face the change of events in this new political world. Some practices to keep in mind are to not fear negativity by practicing mindfulness meditation or loving-kindness meditation, don't recycle negativity and invest in micro-moments of connection. These steps will help handle the negative things in a more positive way. With new transitions in our society and political world, this is a very prominent time to be practicing positive psychology. It is very important to remain positive even during dark times. |
