Dealing with Digital Distraction in the Classroom

Dealing with Digital Distraction in the Classroom | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it
Digital devices put the world at our students' fingertips, whether with their own cell phones or with school-provided computers and tablets. But along with opportunities for powerful learning come the risks -- and realities -- of distraction. So what are the best ways to manage digital distraction in the classroom?

Using Technology Doesn’t Make You Innovative – George Couros – Medium

Using Technology Doesn’t Make You Innovative – George Couros – Medium | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it
If a classroom gets iPads, a question you will often hear immediately is, “What apps should I download?” In our concern for machines taking over education, we often do things that encourage machines to take over our teaching. I have been privy to seeing many educators use “flashcard” apps with students, not because they see it as a better process, but because they feel they need to justify iPads in their classroom by using them (the device) in some way with their students. This is often because devices are thrust onto educators without much thought and support on what is possible to do with them and how this aligns with the vision of the community.

I always ask educators to think, “What could you create with this iPad that you couldn’t create before?” Focusing on what we can “create” versus what we “consume” only, is a great starting point. It is not that consumption and content isn’t important. It is just that both consumption and creation should be evident in education for true deep learning.

6 Ways Social Media Will Change Your Classroom -

6 Ways Social Media Will Change Your Classroom - | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it
Technology is changing the world at a rapid pace, and education isn’t exempt from the effects of that. Social media, in particular, is one of the greatest influences of our time — not just on young people, but on culture in general — encouraging social connections and enabling the exchange of thoughts and information on a global scale.

And although it has its drawbacks (peer pressure, bullying, access to questionable content, and its addictive nature, to name a few), there are also tremendous benefits when it comes to social networks — and let’s face it, they’re not going anywhere.

This article shows how using media as an aid in the classroom can affect learners thinking´ perceptions, for instance in the way the information is perceived. It is not only stored in the mental scales but it could be internalized through different perception channels using technology,  it is a great deal for students and teachers since is material resourceful and interactive. Meaning that teachers will not waste a bunch of time only preparing ONE activity but can develop many different ones using different platforms. The future of education and moreover PUBLIC education

5 Ways To Use Drones In The Classroom: Cherishing Students' Passion For Technology - eLearning Industry

5 Ways To Use Drones In The Classroom: Cherishing Students' Passion For Technology - eLearning Industry | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it
Contrary to the belief that technology can be distracting for students, using drones in the classroom can be used as a tool for enriching students' imagination and awaking their natural curiosity.

Drones are a great new technology and really cheap ones can be found online. It is great that schools are teaching students to fly drones because the drone photography industry is growing and has the potential to be huge in the future

Karinna Lazcano's curator insight, June 9, 2022 10:38 PM
This was an interesting article on how to use drones in the classroom to spark students' passion for the use of technology.  Some benefits using drones might bring into the classroom such as this device will reach areas that are unreachable to the human eye.  Students can take pictures of places or scenery and students can speak of these places, describe them and write about them.  Another benefit is to use drones to incorporate math by using the device's movement and calculating distance and time.  Technology is here and why not incorporate it into the education system to spark students' curiosity.

What does Learning Look Like?

What does Learning Look Like? | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it

"A while ago, I created this poster A Tale of Two Classrooms.  It wasn't meant as a statement of Classroom B is best.  It wasn't even meant as a statement of Classroom A is awful.  It was meant as a representation of Classroom A and B."

Krissy Venosdale revised her Classroom A and Classroom B poster recently to represent "What does Learning Look Like". Some of these Classroom B descriptors indicate a learner-centered environment. What are some other descriptions that you would include?

Here are some of Krissy's thoughts behind Learning:

"Learning is a journey.  Our kids change. The world changes.  We change as teachers.  This morning, I made a revised version of Classroom A versus Classroom B.  As someone pointed out, it’s not a black and white issue. There is so much grey and so much individual choice.  I’m not saying A or B is better for everyone. I’m saying you’ve gotta think and really understand what you want learning to look like in your classroom."
