5 Creative Ways To Use Skype In The Classroom

Creative Ways To Use Skype In The Classroom

The answer: in more ways than you could imagine. While Skype was not designed as an educational tool, it’s quickly becoming one as teachers discover the many ways it enriches their lessons and the lives of their students. Even something as simple as hosting a guest speaker through a video call can add excitement to a lesson.

As with any tech tool, it can seem daunting to introduce this into your classroom at first. If you don’t know where to start, try one of these five creative ideas.

Microsoft recently showcased a new Skype feature that allows for real-time, two-way, voice translation! This feature will make the Skype Cultural Exchange even more extensible and will allow those who use Skype for non-native language acquisition to have in-depth conversations, in their own languages, about their progress and issues in their learning.

The Question Game: A Playful Way To Teach Critical Thinking

The Question Game: A Playful Way To Teach Critical Thinking | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it

"Big idea: Teaching kids to ask smart questions on their own

A four-year-old asks on average about 400 questions per day, and an adult hardly asks any. Our school system is structured around rewards for regurgitating the right answer, and not asking smart questions – in fact, it discourages asking questions. With the result that as we grow older, we stop asking questions. Yet asking good questions is essential to find and develop solutions, and an important skill in innovation, strategy, and leadership. So why do we stop asking questions – and more importantly, why don’t we train each other, and our future leaders, to ask the right questions starting from early on?"

I agree with the fact that recently, students have been 'trained' to give the correct and not ask smart questions. In school ,teachers usually ask us questions and if we answer that correctly, we get praised. For subjects sciences and humanities require a lot of questioning and thinking in order to understand and to learn  more quickly. In my opinion, i think that teachers should give students a chance to ask questions that they have and not go through a topic blindly. If the students is shy to ask, the teacher could create a website so that the whole class can ask questions whenever they feel like and both the teachers and students themselves can answer the questions. This would enable the student to think out of the box to ask and answer questions by themselves

Teacher 's guide on creating Personal Learning Networks | PLN | PKM | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it

As social media become more and more predominant as platforms of connection and collaboration, the need for creating and maintaining a PLN ( Personal/Professional Learning Network ) becomes more pressing. As teachers and educators we are expected to be on top of the latest trends that can inform and enhance our classroom teaching as well as our professional growth. We are also expected to know the web tools that our students use and the new ones we can use with them in the future;  but this is not always possible and  because not all of our time constraints it becomes difficult to keep up the the new releases . It is at times  like these that you can call upon your PLN.

Nik Peachey: How I use social media for my professional development

Nik Peachey: How I use social media for my professional development | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it

The issue of how we use social media for our own development as teachers and as digitally skilled individuals is of vital importance, not just because it can enable us to keep developing as teachers through the content, ideas, resources and above all people it gives us access to, but also because the way we use digital media for our own development should guide and influence the way we use it with our students and build their digital literacies and communication skills.

Laura Montenegro's curator insight, September 10, 2016 11:05 PM
Talking about professional development, it is important to look always for ways in order to improve our study and profesional skills as teachers and as digital individuals. With this social media can provides us athentic input and materials such as articles, games, books, etc. For our own development and it is also proved that it can guide and influence students perseptions and interests. The autor divided social media into three different sections: Information in ( the input, links and places where to find information), information processing ( the process of learning and capture more and more information) and finally, information out (when you share what you've learned). In my opinion it is very important to share our results because in this way we are going to realize what we really learn and ow we did it, also to understand how our learning process works and how it does not.
