Moodle Monday – Gradebook Calculation Formulas –

Moodle Monday – Gradebook Calculation Formulas – | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it

Today’s Moodle Monday will be focusing on how you can create a formula in Moodle to calculate a weighted mean of grades.

As it stands, Moodle automatically assigns a simple weighted mean of grades to every assignment that is added in a Moodle course. (For example: if a module has 2 assignments, each activity will be weighted 50%)

However, if your assignments are not weighted equally (or you have included activities such as quizzes, workshops etc.), it is possible to create a formula in Moodle to calculate a weighted mean of grades. These final course grades can then be made visible to students.

To create formulas (or set grade calculations) in Moodle, follow the pattern of formulas/functions you find in other spreadsheet programmes such as Excel. They all start with an (=) sign and use common mathematical operators and functions.

Some potential Moodle improvements

There have been some very interesting discussions about potential changes ongoing on the Moodle.org forums by some Moodle HQ staff Here are some you may want to go look at and take part in!

Gradebook Survey
As you may be aware, Martin Dougiamas is running a Moodle Gradebook Enhancement Survey to get feedback from teachers about how they use Gradebook. This is the more detailed survey based on results of a short one they ran a few weeks back. If you have not yet taken the survey, I strongly recommend you to do so. Take the survey - https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/MoodleGradebookEnhancement

Element Library
Damyon Wiese has posted a very interesting discussion around a specification for moving to an element library for Moodle. It has some great thoughts on templates the pros and cons and is definately worth a look if you are a designer or developer. See discussion on element library - https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=261202.

Reporting
Adrian Greeve posted that they are planning to implement a more flexible reporting system into Moodle.  This has spawned a great discussion – so if you have thoughts on reporting requirements you have for Moodle – chip in: See discussion on reporting - https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=261049

Navigation improvements
Frédéric Massart posted about the discussions about improving the interface and navigation options within Moodle to make things more user-friendly. They have a current draft specification which needs more feedback. Not all of the ideas are yet fleshed out fully, but some are and are looking very interesting indeed. Take part in the discussion .https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=261224

How To Plug Outcomes From Interactive H5P Activities Into The Moodle Gradebook

How To Plug Outcomes From Interactive H5P Activities Into The Moodle Gradebook | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it

H5P has received an open and warm embrace by the Moodleverse. It might be time you too learned how to adopt it into your Course.

H5P offers a number of snappy interactive “content types,” fulfilling a variety of interactive experiences. If the type can provide information about user performance, chances are it can be compatible with the Moodle Gradebook.

Here is an example that shows how easy it is to add interactive content into the grading. It uses a demo Moodle 3.3 site.

Ensuring Moodle Grades are Accurate - YouTube

This video provides instruction on how to check grades for accuracy. There are times when Moodle "thinks" that it should stop calculating grades auotmatically, and the instructor does not realize that this has happened. This video shows the instructor how to revert back to automatic grading.
