Guest Blogging: Google Not Walking Their Talk

Guest Blogging: Google Not Walking Their Talk | Must Market | Scoop.it

Guest Blogging Works Because
Guest blogging is not dead and most likely it will never die. We have the proof coming right from a guest blog post on Google. We also have proof from fiends at SalesForce who BLEW UP their blog by asking for guest posts.

SalesForce published 54% of the time from guests last year and their blog traffic went through the roof. Even better, they made more money. Strange that Matt Cutts would suggest sticking a fork in guest blogging when Google continues to ask guests to blog.

Guest blogging works, when done right, because your guest brings their social network to your content. This "friends of friends" marketing idea is at the core of our Startup Factory funded startup. Curagami believes in the power of THEIR content on your digital assets.

So, when Google's talk is one way and walk is another GO WITH THEIR WALK. And in the case of guest blogging Google's walk supports guest blogging.

Content's Marketing's Hard Rain A-Gonna Fall & Here's Your Umbrella

Content's Marketing's Hard Rain A-Gonna Fall & Here's Your Umbrella | Must Market | Scoop.it

Content's Marketing's Hard Rain A-Gonna Fall
As much as I love a good debate the one I covered on ScentTrail Marketing on Friday between Scoop.it CEO Guillaume and ace content blogger Mark Schaefer is moot.

Google's algorithm is set. Facebook's "edgerank" is tightening. As Barabasi notes in his highly recommended book LINKED: How Everything Is Connected To Everything Else a hard rain is about to fall on content creators.

Do I believe in Guilluame advocacy of content curation? Yes, do I believe content curation can save PR4 blogs? Not even a little bit. The rich are about to get richer. Smart move is to pay the freight - cut partnership deals with content hubs in your business segment.

This G+ post shares how to structure such a deal since you need to discuss a lot of dimensions of support (not just what you owe them for their greatness lol).

18 Great Tips To Increase Blog Traffic [6 from Marty]

18 Great Tips To Increase Blog Traffic [6 from Marty] | Must Market | Scoop.it
A couple of days ago, I was lamenting to my friend Abbie Fink that Spin Sucks grew only 29 percent in 2012. She rolled her eyes at me as I was finishing my statement. “Only 29 percent,” she said.

Via Damjan Štrekelj
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

I would add:

#13 GAMIFY.

#14 Guest Post (especialy with Google Authorship coming).

#15 Contestify (create cool contests).

#16 Work on blogs navigaiton and keyword silos.

#17 Add "Poeple who Read Also Like...".

#18 Add email subscription and regular persona based emails.

That last tip needs some explanation. Blogs have a hard tie gaining substantial PageRank because they tend to be one and done (people come read the post you just pitched on social media and leave). Fix one and done with a "People who like, also like..." Amazon-like feature sharing relevant content to the post on the page.

The other SEO issue with blogs is calendars make for bad keyword silos. Organize your blog into a series of 2 to 6 keyword "silos" such as "Internet marketing" and develop landing pages to summarize the content. This landing page is where you want rank to go as it is the top of the silo.

Read my Advanced SEO: Bleeding, Bottling and Siloing for more tips on how to organize a keyword silo:
http://scenttrail.blogspot.com/2012/06/seo-advanced-lessons-in-bleeding.html

Finally stop treating your blog like a blog and more like a website by adding email subscription forms and developing persona based email marketing. Best guide to how to do this is Managing Content Marketing (book) by Rose and Pulizzi.

SO...there are all kinds of ways to double or triple your blog's read

The whole issue of content marketing leaves me a bit breathless.  What is it?  Where does it fit? What am I already doing that fits into the definition of Content Marketing?  What do I need to do differently that I am not doing now?  Questions. Questions. Questions. Medium Rocks: New Mobile Micro-Blogging Tool Is A MUST USE via @Scenttrail

Medium Rocks: New Mobile Micro-Blogging Tool Is A MUST USE via @Scenttrail | Must Market | Scoop.it

Medium Cool
Why do we need another blogging tool? Reasonable question. If Medium was simply and only another micro-blogging and content curation tool then the answer would be in the negative.

We don’t need another blogging tool no matter how cool, efficient and mobile-ready the new tool’s User Interface. That’s why Medium isn’t a micro-blogging tool. Medium is a community forming NOW and that has many benefits including:

Grow with the network while not as crowded as Medium will become.

Fill the hole between your blogs and social nets.

Curate across your owned properties easily into one place.

Create and curate mobile ready content.

Why Brands MUST Blog! [Infographic]

Why Brands MUST Blog! [Infographic] | Must Market | Scoop.it

Blogging Is Important For Brands because, blogging is one of the most important and trusted method to promote brands for many years.

Via Jeff Domansky, Brian Yanish - MarketingHits.com
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Beyond The Stats
This is a great Blogging For Brands Infographic, but there is more to why brands must blog than stats. We live in a connected age when anyone can get to know anything.

Blogs create a sense of VOICE. They have a tone and a rhythm that communicates mountains of information about what a brand is really about. Blogs help supply the brand advocates any company depends on with social ammunition and fodder for their own blogs.

Blogs also react to what is happening NOW. If there is a national story an active blog is a great place to share your take. If there is a ripple in your brand's fabric a blog is a great place to iron out the wrinkle.

This is not to say that blogs are defensive. Blogs imply a promise - we will share on a regular basis and you (our brand advocates) can comment, participate and inform our efforts. Blogs say you are in this WITH US (visitors and brand advocates).

The collaborative idea of a blog can help a brand match its walk and talk, create a distinct tone and become a hub for all social marketing. Blogs are a must for brands and for many more reasons that captured in this excellent infographic.

7 Reasons Your Blog STINKS At Generating Leads

7 Reasons Your Blog STINKS At Generating Leads | Must Market | Scoop.it
Blogging and inbound marketing aren't working for a huge percentage of marketing agencies and consultants. Find out why your blog isn't generating leads.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

WOW, is this a MUST READ for all 'inbound marketers". I realize we are all inbound marketers now and, as Marcus points out in this excellent post, that is part of the problem. We Internet marketers love to run to one side of the boat damn the consequences (like drowning LOL).

Don't misunderstand my lament, I love the fact everyone and their sister is in love with content marketing. Friends of mine and I have been preaching content, content and more content since 2003. Careful what you wish for.

Now two trends are meeting head-on. Everyone is creating and curating more content and so we are swamping the boat. Content creation and curation is NOT a dabbler's game. If the only thing you write is a grocery list please don't assume you can write mega-viral content. You can't.

Creating great content takes WORK. I just wrote that if creating an online community (a tribe that loves you and follows you like the Grateful Dead) is the hardest thing to do well then writing mega-viral content that generates leads is a close second.

This article is GREAT and correct. I would add most content marketers forget to:

* RESEARCH those Keys.

* Watch near real time metrics.

* Double down on leaders.

* Leave losers.

* Write, Write and Write some more.

* Curate, Curate and Curate more.

* Connect top of funnel (what generates traffic).

* To Bottom of funnel (where conversions live).

There is no easy or fast way to do any of these things (sorry). I'm convinced you cannot either create or curate your way to where you need to be. You must CURATE and CREATE to become an authority, to be a player.

Marcus has written a great article about sins we've all committed. Sin less and create more in 2013 and you will be one of the special inbound marketers who actually know how to write to make money.
