The importance of design is only increasing. Consumers have instant access to global marketplaces and ever-higher expectations of service. They no longer distinguish between physical and digital experiences. This makes it increasingly difficult to make your product or service stand out from the crowd. As a result, design has become a CEO-level topic for many executives.
But while the concept of “design thinking” emerged as far back as 1969, and while many companies have tried to adopt its principles, relatively few have made true shifts in growth and profitability through design. Fewer still have been able to prove concretely the exact value of the design actions they’ve taken.
We have begun to explore the underlying design practices that allow some firms to succeed above others. Our research into global companies across multiple industries aims to uncover the connections between business value and design. Our early findings, presented in this article, are not yet statistically significant; we will continue to expand our data set in 2018 to reach that goal. But already some trends are evident. We see ten design actions across three themes that appear to correlate with improved financial performance.

Design thinking has become such a hot topic amongst L&D and innovation teams at large companies that one would think executives see it as their silver bullet solution to their innovation woes (that, or it’s a way for them to be seen to be investing in innovation and providing a creative outlet for their millennial staffers). Whatever the case, over 80% of new product launches at large companies fail and it’s because, as Michael Dell famously put it, “ideas are a commodity, execution of them is not”. The same holds true in the startup world where 95% of startups fail, usually due to market failure stemming from botched execution. While design thinking is indeed an incredibly powerful ideation and prototyping tool that I use with my team and with clients, it is but one of many pieces to the corporate innovation puzzle. It alone won’t deliver any value beyond temporarily galvanizing employees and delivering some chemical reactions.

At first glance, it looks as though the group of young adults is building Lego. But these are actually students at the University of Cape Town’s Hasso Plattner Institute of Design Thinking, and they’re using the colourful blocks to design a prototype. It represents policy reform ideas around transitioning from informal to formal economies. It’s…

The most difficult thing about being a designer seems to be writing the bio of your LinkedIn profile, “about” pages for websites, and cover letters; the process of explaining what you do to anyone is a giant pain in the ass. It’s ironic that the services we tell our client we’re experts in (like branding and clearly communicated messaging) are…

Design thinking is more popular than ever. Originally developed at Stanford University’s d.school, this human-centered method helps teams find innovative solutions to existing problems. While working in Berlin, I had the opportunity to learn design thinking at the Hasso-Plattner Institute in Potsdam, Germany. Though there is a whole process to design thinking, I’ll only be presenting selected techniques from it, which I believe enrich the coaching practice.

Previously in this series, we explored why collaborative projects are vital for students. But if we’re being honest, creative projects are really hard to pull off with students. We will now explore how design thinking can work as a roadmap for getting the most out of collaborative projects.

Everybody’s talking about innovation these days. While many organizations focus on innovation and Design Thinking as a way to innovate, the most successful organizations focus on creating a culture in which innovation thrives. Innovating through hackathons, bootcamps, brainstorming sessions, sprints and the like is a good start, creating a culture of innovation is what will…
Some of the aims of Design Thinking's approach are to create: greater inclusivenessbetter team cohesionhigher levels of collaboration and interactionincreased creative confidenceEveryone thinks, feels, and experiences things differently. Differences are what we need. Knowing that certain activities are not natural for everyone means that some preparation, explanation, and trust-building, before the launch, can go a long way towards preventing people from jumping ship. Some of the obstacles the process aims to overcome: Fear of failureIntimidationLow self esteemHierarchyCreative blocksBlind spotsSpecialisation bias

Design thinking ultimately comes down to starting with a set of objectives and passionately exploring how to develop a solution based on those goals. While this approach is becoming popular in the business world (particularly the startup world), it’s incredibly difficult to implement. Unless you invest in educating your staff, getting managers on board and…

n 2012, 80% of Apple’s revenues came from products that were less than five years old. What does this tell us? The world is changing fast and the best companies are able to adapt.
