Empowering Students in the Disinformation Age - developing digital detectives by Jeff Hewitt

Empowering Students in the Disinformation Age - developing digital detectives by Jeff Hewitt | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"What was once the Information Age is rapidly becoming the Disinformation Age, where any information online can be used to support any viewpoint, even those that are patently false. With unrestricted internet access just a few taps on the smartphone away, it is impossible to monitor our students’ online activities constantly. We cannot be on hand to tell them what is right or wrong or true or false. Sometimes, we’re not even sure ourselves.

As educators, it falls to us to teach our students a measure of responsibility when they go online. The internet has infiltrated almost every aspect of education. We use it to take attendance, contact parents, look for activities, and do research. Our hope is that our students are using it for research and educational games."

Cynthia Cuellar's curator insight, June 12, 2022 11:31 PM
As educators, we now have the capability to monitor our student's online activity during the school day on their school-issued devices but not on their own personal devices.  A classroom management platform called GoGuardian helps educators monitor student online activity on their school devices. Yes we can't be with our students and monitor their activity 24/7 we can trust what they have learned a digital citizens and the examples we have set will be a positive journey.

5 Interesting Ways to Read the News Every Day - Make Use Of

5 Interesting Ways to Read the News Every Day - Make Use Of | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"News has evolved, and how you read it needs to evolve too. It’s not about going to one site any more. It’s also not about reading through social networks.

Reading the news today isn’t as simple as it used to be. There is an information overload that you need to counter. Plenty of sites have their own biases that you have to manoeuvre. And lots of smaller news outlets have the most interesting articles.

So change how you read news: take small bites, track a single subject, or read the most trending articles. These sites and apps will give you an interesting way to consume news."

Ruth Reynolds's curator insight, July 28, 2017 7:38 PM
This sounds like a good way to help students develop media literacy. Check multiple sources. Focus on a single topic of interest for our current studies.

Six Ways to Battle the Growing World of "Fake" - Growing Leaders

Six Ways to Battle the Growing World of "Fake" - Growing Leaders | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
You may remember hearing about the terrifying hoax that occurred on the eve of Halloween in 1938. A radio broadcast of Orson Wells, War of the Worlds, purported that Martians had invaded earth. The program created a nationwide panic. It seemed so real; Americans believed it.

Well—it’s happening again today.

We live in a growing world of “fake.” In the words of journalists Jon Swartz and Marco della Cava, “Fake content is a genuine problem on the Internet. Between fake news that sways elections, fake apps that trick shoppers and fake book reviews that stymie sales, the web has seen a surge in fantastic, misleading and outright false messaging that threatens to make the truth hard to find.”

Welcome to the world of social media.

Understanding the Weaponization of News Media with danah boyd @zephoria - Speed of Creativity @wfryer

Understanding the Weaponization of News Media with danah boyd @zephoria - Speed of Creativity @wfryer | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
We live in dynamic times, and it can be extremely valuable as well as thought provoking to have an opportunity to listen to an insightful scholar share analysis about our evolving information landscape. This evening, thanks to a tweet from Jackie Gerstein, I watched an hour long lecture presented by danah boyd (@zephoria) recently in Detroit focusing on “The Future of Information.” To understand our present and future, danah related (among other things) stories of how troll culture has emerged and become a significant part of our media environment which confuses many and leaves people wondering who to trust.

The site boasts four modules that each contain lessons, student challenges, and discussions. The lessons’ panelists are journalists from the New York Times, Buzzfeed, and the Washington Post, to name a few. There’s also a “check tool” that allows students to evaluate the credibility of any piece of news they may be uncertain of, following the news-literacy principles they learned throughout checkology’s lessons

Top Global Teachers Share Their Solutions On The Fake News Epidemic by C. M. Rubin

Top Global Teachers Share Their Solutions On The Fake News Epidemic by C. M. Rubin | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Twitter, Facebook and other prominent new social and online media platforms have a very different structure to any free press vehicle we have seen in the modern world. There is no third party editing process by a recognized and respected media brand (which would include fact checking and a professional editorial review). Content “as is” is simply shared among a multitude of users. Respected traditional news outlets have also endured criticism and hardships. Competition from the new web companies has challenged them in a way that, according to the Pew research center, “goes far beyond the financial side, to the very core elements of the news industry itself.” `

How does one speak credibly without ‘the filter of the Fake News,’ how do we judge who is telling the ‘truth,’ and most important for our article today, how do we teach our children what they should believe in a new era of fake news?
