200 universities just launched 600 free online courses. Here’s the full list. | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it
If you haven’t heard, universities around the world are offering their courses online for free (or at least partially free). These courses are collectively called MOOCs or Massive Open Online Courses. In the past six years or so, close to 800 universities have created more than 8,000 of these MOOCs. And I’ve been keepin

15 free games that will help you learn how to code

15 free games that will help you learn how to code | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

"Online learning has come a long way in the last few years.

"When I started learning to code, the options were limited—lots of books (not even e-books), some very basic online tutorials, and a whole lot of experimentation.

Online learning has come a long way in the last few years. There are interactive courses, tons of online tutorials, and one of my personal favorite ways to practice coding: games.

While a game alone probably isn’t going to teach you everything you need to know about coding, it can be a really incredible way to practice the skills you’re learning. It makes practice fun. And if you’re anything like me, you might suddenly realize you’ve spent the last four hours reinforcing your coding skills without even realizing it.

I’ve tried out some of the most entertaining and useful games for learning to code. Check out my favorites below."

The Best Web Publishing Tools and Services a Link Directory by Robin Good

The Best Web Publishing Tools and Services a Link Directory by Robin Good | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it
The best tools, web apps and resources for any independent web publisher

Via Robin Good
Jim Lerman's insight:

If you need a handy reference for your web publishing needs I have spent a few days pulling together the best tools I use and know-of that I would recommend to use, in an organized and curated link directory of over 70 different categories.

From "landing page builders" to "survey tools" and "domain name finders" I have you covered.

In general, I have limited the amount of tools and services listed per category to the top 5 I know as to serve also as a curated filter for the vast number of choices available out there.

This is definitely a work in progress as you need to continuously edit, refine and improve a directory like this to make it really useful. You are welcome to suggest tools and services that I have not included and I'll make sure that if they are valid ones they get their space too.

Free to access.

How to Create a Video on Typito

How to Create a Video on Typito | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

Typito is a new-to-me video creation tool about which I wrote a short review last weekend. Typito sits comfortably between the simplicity of tools like Animoto and the complexity of tools like WeVideo. I received a few questions about Typito during the week so I made the following video to demonstrate how it works.

Optimal Video Length for Student Engagement | edX | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it
theo kuechel's insight:

I think this supports a conclusion that many of us, using video clips in learning contexts may have been aware of, or suspected. I first recognised this when I was working on theTeaching and Learning with Digital Video Assets project (2004) with the University of Hull, and later on the EU Edutube Plus project (20011). I think where more analysis is needed is whether subjec content or the aesthetic/ filmic style affects the optimum length. The avaialability of tools

to create more interactive video content may also add a new variable to the mix. If you are using video clips in school I would welcome your comments below.

DebateGraph

DebateGraph | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

description by Internet Scout Project

DebateGraph states, "to change the world you need to look at it in a different way." Many would agree; this platform gives multiple partners the ability to visualize and share different ideas. It's a neat concept and it's one that has been used by the United Kingdom's Foreign Office and CNN. A helpful "how-to" area can get users started and the application allows visitors to link ideas visually via a very easy-to-use interface. This version of debate graph is compatible with all operating systems

Why Historical Maps Still Matter So Much, Even Today

Why Historical Maps Still Matter So Much, Even Today | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

With 150,000 or so old print maps to his name, David Rumsey has earned his reputed place among the world's "finest private collectors." He continues to expand his personal trove as well as the digitized sub-collection he makes open to the public online — some 38,000 strong, and growing.

He's created a series of interactive maps that layer old prints onto the Google Earth and Google Maps platforms, and this summer he plans to launch a geo-referencing tool (similar to one recently introduced by the British Library) that lets users get involved in the digital mapping process themselves.

While preparing for this next expansion of his online map empire, Rumsey remains fascinated by "the power of putting these images up and letting them go," he says.

"Maps have a way of speaking to people very straightforward," he says. "You don't have to have a lot of knowledge of map history or history in general. To me they're perfect tools for teaching history to the public."
