Our podcast focuses on the readings for Visual Literacy II. We review the Multimedia Principle and The Redundancy Principle by Clark and Mayer, and The cognitive style of PowerPoint by Tufte. We discuss different types of graphics and how they can effectively compliment text in eLearning and we talk about when text or graphics can be unnecessary or have a negative effect on the learner. Finally we share how PowerPoint, although a commonly used platform, is often ineffective and in certain cases, harmful, to audiences.

Visual literacy has a long history in Academia; in the 1960's John Debbs founded the International Visual Literacy Association. More recently, ACRL has developed its own standards for Visual Literacy: See http://www.ala.org/acrl/standards/visualliteracy

In this hands-on workshop we will focus on the critical evaluation of visual images; I will provide participants with a definition of visual literacy and a selected bibliography of sources on teaching information literacy and lead participants through two exercises in visual literacy.

Using Visual Materials to Teach Information Literacy Outside the Arts Curriculum | Art Documentation: Journal of the Art Libraries Society of North America: Vol 38, No 1

Students in non-arts disciplines generally are not taught to read and interpret visual images in the same way that those in the arts are taught. As a result, students in non-arts disciplines are often uncertain how to incorporate visual primary sources into their research. Using several of the frames outlined in the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education as an overarching structure, as well as the pedagogical model outlined in TeachArchives.org that focuses on active learning techniques, the authors outline their instructional techniques for teaching students to work with, and even interrogate, visual resources in a non-arts-based classroom.

WHEN MICHAEL BENNETT played for the Seattle Seahawks, he celebrated wins with a victory dance in the team locker room. He did not celebrate them by burning the American flag, contrary to a viral Photoshopped picture that began making the rounds online in September of 2017. If you'd read the fact-checks on sites like Snopes.com, Time, and yep, even WIRED, you would have known that the photo of Bennett burning a flag, his teammates and coach looking on joyfully, was fake.

10 Visual Storytelling Rules Every Digital Marketer--and Student-- Needs to Know

10 Visual Storytelling Rules Every Digital Marketer--and Student-- Needs to Know | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Samantha Lile writes: "Long ago, storytellers were wise old men and women who conveyed tales of the ancients and lessons learned through the ages. Later, stories were told by authors, playwrights and directors. But thanks to technology, anyone can now become a storyteller, a reporter and a publisher.

Visual storytelling, in particular, has emerged as an important trend in web and graphic design, as well as other forms of marketing in the digital era – and for good reason. The visual cortex is the largest section of the human brain. According to a 2008 study, the average person remembers about 10 percent of what they hear when tested 72 hours later. But when visuals are added into the mix, the figure increases to 65 percent."

I found this via Lee Watanabe Crockett's post, but wanted to share Samantha Lile's full version. Lately I've been focused on students as consumers of digital information. It's important to remember they will be--indeed, they already are--creators of digital information, too!

We'll be doing a digital storytelling project later this year, so I'll be sharing these tips with our student authors.

When asked what my first language is, I often answer, “visual.” I think in images, prefer to be taught through images, and like to express what I know through images. I find it disconcerting that as learners progress to the higher grades, there is less use of images and visuals to teach concepts.

The power of the use of vision for learning is emphasized by developmental molecular biologist, John Medina, where in his publication, Brain Rules, he states:
